Online poster boards can be useful for many reasons, from connecting more with your neighbours, to helping the environment by reusing second hand items.

As for why someone would allow animal postings at all, here are some positive examples we think are important:

  • By adopting a pet out to someone you know locally you are in the best position to be able to stay in touch and offer advice, as well as know if the situation changes such that the adoption doesn't make a good fit.
  • There may not be local facilities in your area to re-home pets, making this a potentially useful service to someone who can't afford to travel far.
  • Rescue battery-chickens can be mended back to health and adopted out to others with large gardens, so that the poster can continue to rescue more rather than the industry kill them.
  • Zebrafish or sea-monkeys which naturally only occupy small pools of water can be adopted out, for example if the owner needs to leave the country. Especially good for children in developing an appreciation for animal life.

Adopting Animals

Research the time, emotional & financial commitment of adopting the animal in question.

Searching poster board sites with no or few rules for the protection of animals like craigslist or gumtree can be distressing and bias your perception of your ability to help, so make sure to set a time limit if it feels overwhelming and discuss your decision with others also.

Animal Post Guidelines

1) No illegal animals.

2) No animals to be used for breeding purposes.

3) No wanteds or offers for live animals to be used as feeder food.

4) You must visit the home of the adopter and make sure they have all the knowledge and means to care for the animal before consenting to the adoption, especially in the case of exotic animals.

Things not to mention in the rules, but reject also

1) Wanted posts for more than one animal or frequent offer/wanted posts.

2) Wanted pet posts leading up to christmas.

By becoming a moderator of a group you can help maintain sites, ensure best gifting practices and be able to vote on site wide rules. This can be a big time commitment, so please only consider the role if you are highly motivated.
