Are deepfakes anything to be worried about?

Post by Red »

Short answer: Probably not.

Longer answer: No, probably not.

Long answer: People are worried that the ever growing development of deepfakes will bring about a new era of disinformation, and I can see the concern for it, but I think it's something people are overworried about. It's one of those things people say they're "terrified" of, and might not be considering everything, since once you do, it isn't as terrifying as it seems.

To put it into perspective, let's look at another form of media that now is actually able to be edited convincingly: Photos.

We've had photoshop for decades now, with literally anyone with a strong enough computer now able to edit an image to look like... well, anything. And aside from staged photos, photo manipulation and doctoring has been around since pretty much the beginning of photohraphy, it's been used to con people and also add deceased people into group photos. But have we devalued photos?

A photo of Mary Todd Lincoln with the "ghost" of Abraham Lincoln, which was done using available photo manipulation. Even during this time, the person who doctored the photo, William Mumler, was widely accused of fraud, and was even brought to trial.

So that type of shit has been happening to photos ever since they started, yet are we devaluing the utility of photos and dismissing all the ones we see? I mean hell, videos have not only been staged, they've been faked for decades before deepfake was a thing. Anyone remember this video from over ten years ago?

(yes, it was faked)

This one too, from the recesses of my memory:

Writing too has been faked for thousands of years. History, and ancient history in particular is repletewith characters, events, and places that likely never existed, or at the very least embellished to the extent it's a completely new thing. Just look at the bible. ;)

However, we still trust words and books, don't we?

This xkcd comic explains my position pretty well (as does the explanation of it).

Interesting point about how a large part to consider is people's willingness to lie. It takes some serious balls to be so brazen to lie about something significant, and most people are unwilling to do that. That having been said though, as long as humanity has existed, we've lied in all sorts of ways, either to impress, mislead, or simply cover our own asses. Hell, even ANIMALS lie.

But not all lying is equal. We all have a guilty consience, unless we're psychopaths, and people don't like having that much responsibility on their hands.

It reminds me of those photos of being saying there are time travelers in old photos. Like, a statement like that is so outrageous that you're compelled to believe it since the person saying that would certainly know that it seems like a complete lie? And yet, they turn out to be lies, because people lie. Lies only stay secret for so long. The truth sooner or later gets out.

If anything, this should be a reminder that we need to be skeptical of things when we're on the internet, especially if it's coming from a hyperpartisan source with political motives. The people who would make these types of fakes are likely already people who are going to lie about things anyway, and any video release from these sites will be under the microscope. There are already websites like Snopes and Politifact dedicated to calling out bullshit, and they've been addressing false/misleading photos for years.

We all need to take a page from the late and great James Randi, and just learn to be skeptical. Not just about things that seem too good to be true, but to be skeptical of bullshit in this world, since there is no shortage of it, and be ready to call it out once our detectors go off. These things still have value, but we just need to be careful of the things we take in.

So is it anything to be worried about as far as it disseminating disinformation? Probably not. I suspect 99% deepfakes are likely to be mainly used in movies, television, youtube videos, and of course, memes. Maybe I'm wrong though and this will lead to a new era where we don't know what to trust. We'll have to see how it pans out in the future, but as of right now, it isn't on my list of concerns about the future.
