Hello,
I just wanted to start a conversation about people's experiences of vegans in care settings?
Obviously, diet is really important to people. It's part of their identity, how practice their ethics and relate to the world.
My question is about people who don't have that level of control. In hospitals, care homes etc, where people rely on support of others, are they enabled to have ethical views?
Any experiences you have or thoughts about this as an issue?

Last time I was in hospital (at a psychiatry), I was a vegetarian. They didn't provide me an option to be a vegan, and, to be honest, I didn't mind that a lot.

Thanks for this response. Now you are vegan, do you think it would be a bigger issue if you were in the same position?
I guess the point is that we end up in places where we lose control of our diets (healthcare, carehomes) so dependent on others to support us with that, which isn't always the case.

You did not understand. I was a vegan back then. I have been vegan for years.

Judging by the food I've seen in "care" facilities, as well as the physical environments, personal interactions, and medical modalities, I don't think sentient life itself is respected, never mind such nuances as individual values.

I guess it is like that in the US, but not in other developed countries.

I was really poor, and already vegetarian I wanted to be vegan, knowing issues there are for which I should change, but not even having stamps for a way to purchase enough food I was dependent on where I could get food help, and getting food that way was not with it vegan (I at one short time got food from Food Not Bombs which was an exception), and I was not identifying as a vegan until I had the credit with stamps to buy food myself, and was avoiding animal products in what I bought entirely. It was a number of years ago, I think with hoping for it that things may have changed now, it should and I really hope it has, the choice should be for all.
