hi and happy new year!

Post by kuchikopi »

Hi all - new member here. I've been vegan about a year with a 4-6 month transition period before that. I started eating plant-based for the environmental reasons but quickly transitioned to full vegan for ethical reasons. I'm a fan of Peter Singer and NOT a fan of dogmatic diets. I don't know any vegans in my personal life so I'm looking forward to connecting with you all!

Hey kuckikopi! Welcome to the forum.
What initially inspired you to go vegan? You mentioned Peter Singer, what works have you seen from him?

Thanks for the welcome! My impetus for eating plant-based was environmental reasons, but I was quickly swayed by the ethical argument for not eating animals, which I think is the strongest.

I've read Animal Liberation and seen some of Singer's interviews/discussions online. I also took an online Effective Altruism course he hosted, but that wasn't necessarily related to veganism in particular. It did, however, help to shape my overall views of veganism, i.e., becoming a consequentialist in my philosophy.

Of course the environmental arguments are still one of the strongest, and ultimately it is an ethical argument, but I do agree the ethical arguments in regards to the animals is still the strongest and most obvious.

I need to pick that book up again, been a while since I read it. Great introduction to ethics.

I actually started that course, but I never got around to finishing it. Might get started back on it today!
