Lack of diversity in formula 1 most pressing issue facing the world.

Joaquin Phoenix gets it. He used the biggest platform imaginable to deliver one of the most important messages available: the cruelty and immorality of the dairy industry.

Just days after, another self-proclaimed ethical vegan, Lewis Hamilton, had the opportunity to deliver an important message to millions of people after winning the Laureas athlete of the year award. The issue he chose: lack of diversity in Formula 1. I guess he could have mentioned how the whaling industry causes a slow, tortuous death to thousands of whales, the deforestation caused by the palm oil industry, or perhaps how the beef industry imprisons and kills hundreds of million cows every year, but apparently he thinks the lack of diversity in Formula 1 is a more important message.

It is shocking that Formula 1 is allowed to continue considering the environmental damage it causes. Despite that, I don't think Hamilton should quit and denounce the "sport", since he has put himself in a position where his potential of creating overall good outweighs the negative impact of his presence in Formula 1. However, as of now, most of his fans probably don't know that he is vegan, and if they do they probably think it is because he wants to get an athletic edge over his competitors.

Another discussion to have is how Hamilton doesn't seem to understand that unequal outcome does not equate unequal opportunity. For now, I think the focus should be on throwing some shit on Hamilton for not using his platform for things that really matter.

I agree with you about Joaquin Phoenix. He has been doing this for longer than almost any celebrity out there. Unfortunately most people think he is a bit strange and will discount what he says based on this fact.

As for Lewis Hamilton, he has actually spoken out frequently about his veganism, maybe too much so based on his most recent posting:

A statement like this is liable to turn as many people away from veganism as it does to attract people.

And yes, I agree that car racing is pointless.
