Should I throw away my feather pillows?

Post by RawrBear »

Hi so im recently vegan and my two favorite pillows are both feather pillows as a vegan should i throw them away/donate them or as a poor person can i continue using them since only the original purchase supported the industry and keeping them doesn't contribute to the explosion/abuse of the animals?

Well, there's nothing wrong with keeping the feather ones IMO. No more animals would be killed if you did that. It's just a symbolic thing of 'vegan purity', and I don't think that's something to worry about. :)

There isn't anything wrong with continuing to use it since it won't be causing anymore suffering; a lot of vegans get rid of their old non-vegan stuff because they can't stand using it anymore (and can afford to).

It'd just be a waste of money. Use them as long as they last; get the most utility out of the thing the animals suffered for as you can.

On top of the reasons stated above: Conspicuous consumption can add to suffering. For instance, getting rid of the pillows and replacing them with cotton ones increases (in a small but real way) the demand for cotton farming thus potentially causing more field deaths in your lifetime than if you just held on to the offending article until it wore out.
Carnist: Kills animals and then takes from their bodies
Vegetarian: Takes from animals' bodies, and then kills them when they are no longer profitable
Vegan: Avoids unnecessary harm to animals as much as is possible and practicable

Sapphire lightening, that's a great argument that I had not really thought about until now. Beyond the potential field deaths, there's also the environmental impact of a new purchase to think about.

I love Feather pillows but for me they make too much of a mess and are expensive. Plus, just like my mattress which doesn't have any springs or hard mats in its construction at all, pillow tech has gone up a lot in the last 20 years or so. There is a lot of pillows out there that are just as nice as feather pillows, or better depending on what kind support and soft-ness you need. I am thinking of switching my pillows when I feel they are more worn out than they already are. The ones I am looking at feel like they might be pretty good that I saw at Walmart and are cheaper to replace than Feather pillows. I don't know what they are filled with.
