Sticking to well known people: Mandela, Peter Singer, Sam Harris and Dan Carlin first come to mind.

Da Vinci by a mile. Had to overcome huge childhood adversity to then excel in so many different fields. To top it all off he became an animal welfare advocate and possibly even one of the first vegans.

What was so great about Mandela? I don't really get the hype. A religious meat eater who became an advocate against an injustice against himself and his own people. It was good that he urged his people to not avenge the past injustices once they gained power but wouldn't any halfway decent person do the same? I see nothing exceptional here.

Oh yes, I was going to reply to this and then forgot. I'm tired so I'll try to keep this brief. I have no problem with admiring people that are religious or are meat-eaters. Hell, one of the people I most admire was a baptist meat-eating pastor. It is character traits, efforts to live a good life and making the world a better place that make me admire somebody. Mandela, in my view, was a man with great character and had a huge positive impact on the world.

Exceptional was not necessarily his intention, although it was good, but his accomplishments. Maybe every halfway decent person would do the same, but I don't think every halfway decent person could.

in my case it really is a very, very long list...but i will name a few that did had a great impact on me and this way my life changed.

Jet Li (Li Lien Jie) on tibetan buddhism and tai chi chuan.
Bruce Lee (adaptability in life and situations)
J.J Perry martial arts choreographies which inspired me to engage and to have fun with martial arts.
other important promoters (Wu jing, JC, Collin Chou, Donnie Yen, Mark Dacascos)

From a spiritual perspective - Laozi, Zhang San Feng, Buddha, Yeshua ben hur, Osho, Gandhi, Confucius

From a scientific perspective - Nikola Tesla, Einstein, Heisenberg, Planck, Bohr, Schrodinger, some great astronomers (Copernicus, Kepler, Hubble). JIm Gates, Rich Terrile, etc

I also have respect and insight for atheist scientists like Sam Harris, Dawkins, Krauss, Tyson, Nye, Greene and Shermer.

I definitely agree with miniboes in picking Sam Harris and Peter Singer. I also really admire billionaires like Bill Gates and Manoj Bhargava who are willing to give all their wealth away to the less fortunate.
