When it's somebody who might otherwise do something useful, it is a problem. But I'd say that problem applies just as seriously (maybe more so) to things like the hyperloop.

Why so? I agree that Branson's idea of taking rich people up and down into space is a ridiculous piece of environmental waste, but I like the idea of a quicker way of going from point A to point B.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

Thunderf00t made a debunking of the practicality of it a while back:

Regular high speed maglev trains are great. Evacuated tubes not so great.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Speaking of a useless environmental waste project, how about the Bloodhound SSC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWIb7T-IzPY

Getting to the moon was really powerful as a vision and goal to get people in action. I wish we had something like that for climate change mitigation. The message of environmentalism is a pessimistic one, only seeking to preserve what we already have or, even worse, reverse technological and societal advancements in favor of environmental preservations. People may come into action more readily if there was some awesome moonshot-like idea.
