I wouldn't want him to get discouraged if he tries to go too quickly. Most of all, my focus would be on a sustainable vegan diet. Trying to restrict too much might leave him craving old animal foods.
That might be ''her'' since I am a woman :D
I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on "fat shaming" though.
I weigh like 175 lbs and wearing XXL in my country.I've been in the States and my size was M. So you can guess people's understanding on body image here. I have graduated from one of the top universities in Turkey with a degree but still afraid of job interviews since my appearance will be a part of hiring process.I know being healthy is important but nobody sees your intelligence, education background or character if you are overweight. No matter how long it has been since people seen you last time, first question they ask will be ''have you gained weight?''.And everbody nutrition experts (!) (Don't eat bread, don't eat fruits, drink milk.)

There's some validity in that.

Given:

1. People don't want to be fat (nobody does, and if they do, they're crazy)
2. Losing weight takes determination and will power (and to know how to do it, intelligence)
Therefore:
3. Fat people are lacking in determination and will power (or intelligence, and don't understand how to lose weight).

You're clearly losing weight, though, so you have the qualifications in #2. If you prove you're losing weight, there's no way an employer can come to conclusion #3.

You can solve this pretty easily if you bring proof that you are losing weight, and mention your determination in fixing your diet and getting healthy. Something like a doctor's note tracking your weight loss.

I agree mostly with Katie Hopkins: I would not hire a fat person. BUT I would hire a fat person who showed me evidence that he or she is eating well and losing weight. A fat person who is incidentally still fat (and temporarily), but on the road to health by exercising discipline in his or her life.

Given the argument above, I can totally understand this. I'm more likely to believe what I can see than what somebody says. If a fat person tells me he or she has strong will power and self discipline, I'm going to be rightly skeptical of that due to the weight of the evidence before me. If that same person shows me a doctor's note tracking weight loss, then color me impressed, and I'll believe the claim.

You should mostly avoid sweet fruit, since they contain calories but limited nutrition, and avoid white bread. Whole wheat is OK. The best fruits are the least sweet, like tomatoes or blackberries.

Of course, milk is terrible. Great video on it from a non-vegan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzyFZcuHmeI

I used to take offense from the conversations about my weight. But when you use right words, that never sounds mean. I totally agree with you but you know when it comes to yourself generally people won't be rational. I don't know,I gave my everything to my education and I wanted it to help me somehow. I am a young person who still improves myself though, physically and mentally. I might share my VEGAN success story here in the future :)

elci_ezgi, if somebody made fun of you for being fat, would that discourage you from dieting and losing weight, or encourage you, or be neutral?
If you were in the process of losing weight, would the effect be different?
E.g. if you are gaining weight and somebody makes fun of you, would you be more upset about it than if you were losing weight when it happens, since you know in a few months you will be thinner (and you're thinner every week)?
[/quote]

Btw,If somebody made fun of me while I am losing weight I'd probably be neutral.Because It cannot discourage me since I'm doing it for my own health but it also won't cause me to starve myself to lose more.If somebody made fun of me while I am gaining weight,I'd definitely start a weight loss diet. I am not happy with my weight and I wanna change the things that I can change.

Cool! Once you lose weight, you'll also be contributing positively to the perception of veganism. The more educated, smart, healthy, pretty people we have the better. Just be careful not to lose too much lest you fit the stereotype of the "sickly vegan". :P

If you've lost weight you were already in a calorie deficit. Have you stopped losing weight? Don't get discouraged if your weight starts to fluctuate or you regain a bit after a while. That just means you ate more than you should have, and you should control your portions better. It's very difficult to eyeball calories.

Maybe post some of what you eat here? That can help keep you on track and we can give suggestions.

Update! I've lost 20 lbs since the 15th of March. I usually started my day with oatmeal with fresh fruits,pasta/rice and beans for the lunch and roasted veggies(like potatoes, eggplant etc.) and salad with nuts(or I'd make hummus if I had time) for the dinner. I've never felt hungry and I am still keeping on track.

That's great news!
Have you been keeping track on cronometer every now and then?

Yes, I have. I use it daily and it really helps.
