I think it's a coincidence, but maybe not an amazing one... apparently flat Earthism is catching on among vegans. There's a lot of crazy out there.

I cringe that you'll have to deal with these people. Does this concern you, in creating a collective community with them?

Theo and his wife actually got expelled for eating non-vegan food. Yes, I am a bit concerned by the amount of woo in the community. They want to have yoga and reiki retreats etc. The vaccine debate on our Facebook page was a heated one.

Having said that, I would be more comfortable around a vegan woo hippie than a "rational" meat eater.

Yikes, what did they eat? They were just there and they brought some meat or something?

Well, it definitely wouldn't be safe to live somewhere where a bunch of people are collected together who won't get vaccinated.

If you add on to that people who are carrying and spreading deadly diseases because they won't get a shot, it may change the equation a bit.

Is there any way you can argue for some basic health standards people have to accept, like at least being in favor of basic preventative medicine like vaccines?
There's even a vegan flu shot now, called Flublok.

She got a job in a local (non-vegan) restaurant where she was seen eating fish. They had previously stated that they were transitioning to veganism but that they would be vegan once they joined the project.

This is a concern but not something I want to bring up at the moment as people have such strong feelings about this issue. An issue like that could kill the project. The fact that we are quite isolated and have a huge piece of land should lower the chance of contamination.

It seems like it's most important to bring up now. Just like in a romantic relationship, you probably want to work out such serious issues as religion and children before you get married rather than waiting for them to cause problems later after you're more invested.

How about this as a compromise?

Those who choose to remain unvaccinated can leave when they want, but are subject to quarantine at their own expense upon returning to the community for the protection of others.

But if I am immunised, do I need to worry about those who aren't? It seems like the ones who need to worry are the ones who are not vaccinated.

I assume there will be children there, not all of whom can be vaccinated (the young, or those with conditions that preclude it). Vaccination also isn't proof against catching the disease, it will usually just reduce the severity, assuming the disease hasn't mutated. You're probably less likely to catch and spread it if you're vaccinated, but if you have an outbreak there because enough people weren't... all bets are off.
