Right. Allison, have you read the Deontology thread?

ThatNerdyScienceGirl wrote:I really don't see your point. Are you arguing that chickens in the wild have a much better life than backyard hens?

And are you just sweeping the "children treated as free manual labor" argument under the rug without even addressing it?

And I certainly hope that you are not saying that modern humans alive today should be accused of actions taken by people who domesticated chickens 9000 years ago, because I despise arguments that take an entire group and lump them together as perpetrators of a crime that only a handful committed.

Veganism is about reducing suffering done to animals, it's not about regarding pet cats as unethical by nature.

Somehow I responded to this earlier but I must not have hit submit. I apologize.

No. I am not arguing chickens are better in the wild. I am saying we messed with their evolution to serve our needs. And eating your back yard hens eggs is kinder than factory farming, but it's still IMO a disconnect. We don't need eggs, and it seems like any reason to eat eggs is a rationalization. It's also speciest mentality to claim we're giving the chicken a nice life when in fact their species evolved millions of years without us meddling with it.

No. I wasn't sweeping the children issue under the rug. I just thought my previous post was clear. Parents have an ethical responsibility to their children, because they are dependent. Yes. You have a responsibility to your pets, if you choose to adopt or rescue. This is unlike the case many people who adopt animals for food purposes and then try to say it's perfectly okay because they are giving the animal a great life.

Our actions today unlike 9000 years ago, far exceed those of the past. Industrialization and practice has perfected our techniques. You choosing to go vegan is awesome. Thank you for that, but our compassion should be (in my opinion) extended to insects, and even plants if we can. Obviously stopping all harm is impractical but we should extend kindness and compassion to all creatures. No I am not going to force that on you because I honor you as a human being. I will try to teach those who want to understand however. If you think that's extreme, and self righteous, then please point to me where I am wrong.

Can I add, getting children to do chores isn't exploitation. It's necessary to teach them how to live independently. They are learning skills they need in their adult lives, they are contributing to the household, and building confidence. My girls are very little but they love to help me shop, clean up the toys, cook etc.
I also have hens, they love living with a vegan lol, so many scraps. I actually wish they wouldn't lay eggs, we just end up throwing them out or giving them away (depending on the weather, it's very hot here and they go bad quickly). The hens don't care about eggs, but I don't either, I don't want to eat them lol.

At least giving them away may displace eggs your neighbors would buy from a grocery store, so maybe there's a little less suffering.
