A few updates to the forum

Post by brimstoneSalad »

Added some long overdue extensions.

1st: Simple Mentions.
Type an at sign followed by a username and press enter (or click a name in the drop-down thing) to mention somebody, and that user will get a notification.
When you hit enter, the mention will turn into code

So @brimstoneSalad looks like this:

Code: Select all

brimstoneSalad
If you don't hit enter (or click) it won't work. @brimstoneSalad doesn't do anything at all (see how it's not red).

2nd: Auto-save draft.
You should notice that your posts are now being auto-saved as drafts every thirty seconds. When you load the page again (if you hadn't submitted the post) you'll find your last saved draft there.
This should mean you'll never lose more than thirty seconds of work on a post again if it's working correctly, which should be nice, although it won't help you if you get disconnected from the internet.

3rd: some login based stuff.
New users should be automatically logged in when they activate their accounts, and stay logged in should be checked by default.
This might help increase activity a bit.

4th: removed subjects from replies

I also finally fixed the favicon... so you can tell which pages in your tabs are PhilosophicalVegan.

@Cirion Spellbinder is working on some emoticons for the site:

Please let him know if you have any ideas.

Great work. Thanks.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

@Jebus Is the mention notification system working for you?
I don't have any good way to test it.

EDIT: Red and I found it's working.

Hey, I know someone asked about this a few years ago, but can we have an option to add a reaction to a certain post (sort of like Discord) if there is a plugin available? I know the concern is that it will not elevate to a larger discussion, but I think it can be useful if you want to say "yeah yeah" without having to leave a post.

@Red I'm just testing this thing out to see how it works. Sorry to bother you. Also what should I do with my signature?

@Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I'm now seeing what will happen if I mention myself.

@Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
If you look closely, you'll see that I didn't delete my signature.

I think having to leave a post is a good thing because it requires more effort, so if you want to say something that doesn’t really matter (like I agree) you have to really care. I think reactions or other things like upvotes and downvotes promote circlejerky behavior by encouraging vague agreement or disagreement instead of discussion.

That seems like the case to me. Although Twitter, facebook, etc. support it. I'm wondering if they do so based on research that it increased user activity and engagement.

I guess we could try it out?

@Red
I wouldn't. I feel guilty saying this because I know I should also be working on the wiki, but I think your time on the wiki is more valuable than this.
