Philosophical Vegan Discord?

Post by Mr. Purple »

Oh, how i've missed this place.

I joined the r/vegan discord channel a while back and have been discussing things over there. I’m a big fan of people like Jonathan Haidt, Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and other logical centrists that focus on how both sides have blind spots and we need to have the ability to engage with a diversity of viewpoints on the left and right to accurately gauge the truth. A lot of the members of that discord and virtually all of moderators are very left wing social justice warrior types, so whenever the topic of silencing speech came up, I would respectfully push back and explain why we should be open to discussing opposing ideas. Ironically enough, I’m now banned:P. Stereotypes about SJW confirmed. It's crazy that being open to dialogue could be considered a far right idea now.

It would be nice if there was a philosophical vegan discord that could deal with more robust conversation.

I have an unused discord server, so we can use that. I'll rename it to philosophical vegan, and I'll send an invite if people are interested. If so, tell me what options would suffice.

edit: Here it is so people can understand what it's about.

Heya, welcome back, found some of the threads where you were discussing utilitarianism with brimstoneSalad really interesting.

Do you really think Peterson deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as great thinkers like Harris and Haidt? He has said some good things against the SJW movement but he believes there is an invisible man in the sky with whom one can telepathically connect. He has also said that vegans are like a religious cult.

It really sucks that mainstream veganism is turning in to this.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

I agree with this sentiment. While I strongly disagree with Haidt on veganism, Peterson is broadly an idiot on just about everything outside his narrow expertise in psychology and a few of the things he has said against campus SJWism.

I'm not equating or ranking those three. They are just the 3 that speak most effectively about the topic at hand.
Also, Peterson doesn’t believe in the man in the sky version of god. He has an idea about truth that seems to be tied to pragmatism and evolutionary survival. Christianity is true because it has shaped a culture that he views as the most successful. Anyone endorsing that culture is christian to some degree. It’s a confusing and very ineffective way of viewing truth, but i don't think it's supernatural, and it doesn't seem to bleed into anything but religion. He has other messages I view as very important that few people can deliver as well as he can.

Well, I mentioned him in the context of psychology and SJWism, so no worries :P

I’ve liked some of his Q&As sessions and he introduced me to Stephen Hicks’s Explaining Postmodernism. Too bad he endorses idiots like Molyneux and Rubin. And yeah, apparently, he is a fan William James’s and all the ‘act as if god were real’ philosophy.

I've just registered myself. It's the first time I use it, so I'm still trying to understand how it works.
