True that rice is low in protein - I always eat it with beans, so that's probably why I don't notice it (my husband is Latino, so we do a lot of rice and beans in our house).

I've read a few different more scientific explanations for why potatoes are so filling, but it's not just the water content (the Satiety Index research did find potatoes most filling). My husband is forever trying to convince me to eat fruit when I'm hungry (lots of water content, high in fiber), but it does nothing for me. Maybe I'm just weird, but I need more starchy food like potatoes, bread or rice. Something about the carbohydrate in those foods is just a million times more satisfying to me.

Potatoes also have much more protein in them than fruit, which is more satiating, so that could be part of it too. There's also a lot of complexity to satiation, of course, even enjoyment of a meal (a subjective aspect). Potatoes feel like a meal, partially for cultural reasons I imagine, and fruit just doesn't.

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it! :D From my subjective viewpoint, potatoes are a satisfying meal. My husband apparently considers fruit a meal, but that's just crazy  (I was not destined to be a raw foodist, I guess).

Perhaps you're chewing more than you can bite (or is it bitting more than you can chew?) in trying to give up to addictions at once (food and smoking) with all the other issues and hacks life brings...
