You can't categorize them as the same just by the mere fact that they're both boy bands, boy bands from the past, unlike nowadays, had a large male audience.
As for repetitiveness, i gues they had a few songs that were kinda dull, but they wrote over 220 songs! It's hard to write over 220 songs and not be repetitive xD

Maybe people hated them for the pure fact that they are a boy band.

Are movie and video game music better than the stuff that's put on the radio?
