You can't categorize them as the same just by the mere fact that they're both boy bands, boy bands from the past, unlike nowadays, had a large male audience.
As for repetitiveness, i gues they had a few songs that were kinda dull, but they wrote over 220 songs! It's hard to write over 220 songs and not be repetitive xD
