Because it is unlikely that he replaced the burger with a banana. It is likely that he bought another animal product which he had not purchased had he eaten the burger.
Yep, wasting meat just means people buying more meat.

It's very frustrating, because we could cut animal agriculture almost in half if we could just get people to stop wasting food, which would damn near cut the amount of suffering in the world in half too, or at least human-related/caused suffering.

I never understood this line of thinking. Why is it worse to kill a sentient being depending on what you do with the end product ? The cow died already, in the same conditions regardless of what is being done to the meat. Eating the burger, throwing it away, keeping it, it is all the same for the cow. It died.

I will be honest with you, I had not even considered this, but I must have had it in the back of my mind due to the fact that the idea of buying the burger to not eat it seeming worse than the idea of buying it and eating it.

If his intent is to purchase to not consume, the question of replacing with a banana or burger is irrelevant.

My comment was in reply to this; where eating it was mentioned as a possible (but irrelevant) option:

Eating the burger would not make a difference to the dead cow, but it makes a difference to living and unborn cows.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

This is disgusting, but I do not believe it anyway.
I used to eat such things and it happened to me somewhere to mislead. The effects were faster.
