Meat revolts me but I have to live with it

Post by Dsalles »

I have had, for almost a year now, a domestic worker who lives in a room in my apartment because I have a 12-year-old and also spend a lot of time going to the farm and dealing with different offices, so she stays home to watch my daughter and she also does other domestic work.
The problem is she cooks for herself and she makes meat dishes. I tolerate it though insist that she closes the door to the kitchen. Still the smell permeates the apartment. I never had to live with that smell before, except when I was a child and it was fish, on rare occasion.
I dont think I should complain, she knows I do not like it, but thinks she needs to eat it, and,as her boss, I do not want to be a demanding, borgeoise elitist controlling her whole life.
But the smell lingers long after, and it really nauseates me.
I dont know what to do except look forward to weekends when she stays with friends or her family.

You are her boss, but it's also your home. Would it be inappropriate to ask a worker not to smoke inside, if the smell bothered you?
If not, then the same would seem to apply to what she cooks.

Smokers are much more troubled by not being able to smoke than an omnivore about not being able to eat meat. She'd still be able to eat it on the weekends, and any day she went out to get something to eat.

Maybe you can invite her to brainstorm solutions that let her eat what she wanted, but not cook it in the house.
Dried meat products might be an option for her, or perhaps you can move a microwave outside for reheating things she makes at home and brings to your home frozen to eat through the week.

I understand it's a tense situation when you feel you're holding someone's means of survival in your hands. The way I see it however is if you want to move past the worry of them seeing you as a domineering and temperamental boss, is to really connect with them, explain that if you'd gone into ownership of the apartment with an old friend, you'd still be having the same discussion about not cooking when you're around or at all to preserve your sanity, because it's more than a diet preference, but a political struggle for you. That it's even more valuable to you that they're willing to spend their working life providing for and building a connection to your kid, just that this is an integral part of how you want to raise them, and to know the health warnings etc. My two cents anyway, hope you find some solutions and peace with it all.

No worries :)

In other news it took me a while to figure out that was a blurry image of a cow crossing it's legs and a head jutting out, in my head it was one of those bugs bunny cartoon chicken carcasses come alive creeping up behind you to haunt the past eater :P
