Really interesting resource Vivian, will read more and give feedback soon, we're working on a kind of collaborative e-book at the moment sticking to a concise table of contents:

Hi!

Just to clear things up: I am not the author. Vivian Penelope Alvéz has retired from the publishing business (the marketing campaign for A SHORT GUIDE TO VEGANISM had started in late 2016 and taken place up until some months ago). I am her assistant and I will be handling this matter only for the time needed to post the download link across vegan forums.

Kind regards

Hi Dasha, we don't usually allow people to self-promote on the first post, particularly when there's no apparent intent to join in other discussions. That includes "free" resources, which can be a marketing tactic to lead to monetary conversion on other properties.

Are you a volunteer just sharing this because you like it, or are you a paid assistant?

If you'll consider joining in forum discussions longer-term, when you have a higher post count you will be able to post a link in your signature. The signature link is also parsed and followed by search engines, so it's more valuable than a non-parsed or do-not-follow link which can be left in posts.

WOW.

A SHORT GUIDE TO VEGANISM is one of the most comprehensive books about veganism available and your community members could access it for free.

Why would you have a problem with that? It was good enough for you to download.

Mrs. Alvéz just wanted to do something nice for the vegan community. If your egos are bruised, because I will not contribute anything else, then well, so be it.

Maybe next time you rob your members of such a great opportunity, ask them first if they think it is something worthwhile blocking.

Calm down, this is a discussion forum, if we had a promotional bulletin board you could have put it up there but you should understand the principle that we can't have a discussion forum clogged up with promotional material submitted by people unwilling to discuss, it's obviously not practical to do a straw poll every time that happens deciding whether to delete also.

Having said that as I said before I'm sure there's a bunch of interesting material contained worth discussing, like the usefulness of the term Herbivore to describe humans, so I'm willing to link it and quote parts, are you willing to answer questions? Like what is the background of the author, what advocacy organizations, philosophers might they have been drawing inspiration when they compiled the resource, etc.

veganista, these are the forum rules.

Forum Rules wrote:2. Don't come here just to spam your survey/links etc. or to repost large amounts of generic content clearly not written for this community. If it's your first post and it's clear you're just here to get something, it will probably be considered spam. We may or may not be interested in helping you with your survey, or even buying your product/subscribing to your channel/reading your articles or blog (particularly if it's related to the forum subject matter). But please join in the discussion on the forum first and participate in the community.
If your only purpose here is paid promotion, that's against the community rules.

Since you refused to answer my question as to whether you are paid or a volunteer (if you were a volunteer then that might have excused you from the rules since it's not your content and you're not being paid to promote it), I'm assuming you are being paid.

This forum has threads already on most or possibly all of those topics by now.

I understand it covers a broad range of subjects, but you should realize that in itself makes it pretty suspect since it's coming from one person rather than a panel of experts. It's possible for a polymath who does extensive research, but only plausible if those conclusions are in concordance with mainstream scientific consensus... which this does not seem to be.

The author could not possibly have enough experience in all of those fields to credibly depart with the scientific consensus.

It should be a red flag when somebody brags about how many "research sources" they have (over 200! WOW! That must mean it's legit! ), because it indicates a lack of understanding of research quality. Quantity does not equal quality, and particularly here were the topic is so broad 200 is far from impressive for what should be a systematic review and could easily be the result of cherry picking even if those citations are peer reviewed (which I doubt most of them are).

Based on the contents you listed, it sounds like it's echoing starch-solution pseudoscience, which should be another red flag. McDougall is a known quack. Most of us generally prefer to rely on mainstream health authority here, and I don't think there would be that much interest in this even if it weren't paid promotion.

I didn't download it. I'm uninterested in reading it, but I might for the purposes of demolishing it later if there's interest in that and the ebook becomes popular.
veganista1985 wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2017 6:31 am Mrs. Alvéz just wanted to do something nice for the vegan community.
Possible, but not likely. Most people promote "free" ebooks to get customers for their not-so-free ebooks.
Particularly given the implicit fact that you are being paid to advertise this: it's a marketing gimmick, not an act of altruism.
veganista1985 wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2017 6:31 amIf your egos are bruised, because I will not contribute anything else, then well, so be it.
This has nothing to do with our egos, and everything to do with you overtly breaking the forum rules.
I was nice, and despite disagreeing with the apparent content of the ebook I provided a mechanism by which you might better be able to promote the ebook here if you wanted.
veganista1985 wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2017 6:31 am Maybe next time you rob your members of such a great opportunity, ask them first if they think it is something worthwhile blocking.

Should we hold a poll the next time somebody comes here to spam offering penis enlargement pills too? Or get rich quick schemes?
How dare we rob our members of such opportunities!
If people want to look at spam, they know how to find it.

You broke the forum rules. You were alerted to means by which you could promote this material AND follow the rules. You just have to contribute a tiny bit to the forum first. If you're dedicated it would take you a couple days at worst to make the necessary posts to gain the ability to post a signature.
Forums don't do well when they're tolerant of leeching and promotional posts without contributing original content or discussion.

If you really want to share this ebook and you aren't just after promotion to monetize other sales, you are welcome to start a new thread and copy and paste the entirety of the ebook (in several posts to avoid the word limit) without any links to the ebook or the author's other material.

If you don't post the ebook text itself on the forum, we will know that neither you nor the author care about the vegan community, and are only after self promotion and money by way of converting readers with other paid content.

I have color coded this summary and table of context to indicate which elements are red flags for pseudoscience, and added a few comments.

Red Flag.
Possibly a problem.

ZOOS (It does say animal welfare rather than animal rights, and the author seems to be OK with pets, so I'm assuming this only has to do with abuse and not ideology of captivity itself)

VEGAN DOGS

WHAT TO FEED A VEGAN DOG

QUICK, EASY & AFFORDABLE RECIPES
By the looks of it, nearly half of the ebook is almost unavoidably pseudoscience, some of it raging alt-med. Given that, even the other half which could plausibly be credible is probably filled with massive exaggerations and incorrect information too.
The animal welfare section is probably the best, although I'm assuming the same incorrect claims about animal testing never being useful are made based on the author's fondness for alt-med and pseudoscience.

The only thing that makes me think the Vegan Dogs section might be OK (beyond that being hard to mess up) is that there's no Vegan Cat feeding section, and there's a section on "NON-SPECIES-APPROPRIATE KEEPING OF PETS" which might be promising.

A full third of the ebook (the part that has the least to do with science) could be half-way decent. That's hardly encouraging when we consider it's promoted as a package deal.
