Unnatural Vegan Hatred?

Post by TheVeganAtheist »

I just recently collaborated with Unnatural Vegan on youtube, and Im amazed at the number of comments from many vegans of outright hatred for this youtuber. I have watched a bunch of her videos, and felt that our thinking was similar, and so I reached out to work together on the most recent project. She released a version on her channel, which has mostly positive comments, but my version is at least 30% comments directed at Unnatural Vegan, or at me for working with her.

Could someone explain to me all this negativity? Have I missed something?

From what I've seen, some of the crazier vegans don't like her because of her criticisms of the raw vegan movement etc..

I think what annoys a lot of people about Unnatural Vegan is her down-to-earth approach to vegan activism, often critiquing inaccurate beliefs in the vegan community rather than focusing on converting people through a blurred, overly positive message. I’ve seen videos of her arguing against veganism as the best, most natural diet, the cure against cancer and the moral baseline as well as some videos arguing for GMOs and the consumption of bivalves, which is of course likely to stir some controversy. However, mostly her conclusion seems to be that veganism is still the best way to avoid animal suffering in our everyday lives. I usually like her take on things, even though I don’t always fully agree. I’ll try to watch both videos tonight :)

Hey guys. :)

Sorry, TVA. I should have predicted the hatred towards me. Reading through the comments, a lot of it seems to be because of my Tentative Vegan videos and because people think I eat eggs (I don't). Also, my speciesism video from a few months ago. That one makes sense and I will have an update video on that topic soon.

Hey Swayze,
great to have you on the forum. You have nothing to apologize. Love your videos. I was just surprised at how negative the comments were against you, and I haven't seen reason for it.
I have in the past my share of hatred. Comes with having a channel on youtube and discussing these kinds of subjects.

I think it's a good video. What I find interesting about her channel (hi, by the way!) is that she, in contrast to most vegan youtubers, seems not to be very enthousiastic about it at all. Perhaps some people think that you should constantly be praising the amazingness of veganism.

Also, I can't believe you did not mention pooping.
Then again, I guess it is also a benefit.

Also, where in digital hell do you find all these stock images? I assume you're not paying for them?

I actually am. I signed up with Shutterstock because I found that I was spending a lot of time (when creating videos) finding the right images. Its expensive, but its helped speed up video production for me.

Saying things which are controversial among vegans will no doubt cause hatred among some of them.

I only discovered her recently, but I think her content is generally of great quality (really great to have such a rational person being quite popular on YouTube!).

I never heard of the term 'tentative vegan' before, but thanks for putting that videos out! I can imagine this one being controversial among vegans, but the rational ones will certainly agree with you. This is a position most consequentialists (like me) will endorse, and will make veganism look less dogmatic.

This is a video I also have some problems with, but hey, I don't hate you for it. :D The video is mostly centered around the dillema of choosing a human or animal in a life or death situation when only one of them can be saved. This is mostly a non-issue, which doesn't get to the core of what speciesism is about; your personal tendencies are completely irrelevant ethically speaking. We are not perfect human beings, most of us (dare I say all of us?) are doing things which aren't perfectly ethical because of bias, social pressure, and things like that. Speciesism is pretty much by definition irrational, because you're by definition not taking in consideration the interests of the individual being discussed, only due to their taxonomic classification.

You're saying you're going to do an update soon, so I assume you are aware of the problems with it? It which case it would be great.

Maybe a future video could be on the importance of criticizing "crazy" vegans. Showing how things like the Raw Movement, New Ageism, and the hate driven approach of Gary Yourofsky, have effected the vegan movement intellectually.
vegan: to exclude—as far as is practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for any purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.

From what I've read in the comments on TVAs video, people are objecting on different grounds because of some of her stances.

Many anti-gmo folks, (some saying they'd cry if they found out TVA is pro gmo  :? )
some anti vaxxers too
Some talking about oysters not being vegan (that may be a contentious topic)
Many committing the no true Scotsman fallacy (no real vegan would...)
Against Ethically consuming animal products
I think she has said somethings that aren't true like (meat doesn't cause cancer or something like that) though I did see her making some sort of correction in the comments, maybe clarify things idk?
Oil free users complaining about olive oil.
