Vegan food at the university
So since monday I'm going to a university of applied sciences, and I quite like it. I have much more autonomy than I ever had at school. There is barely any vegan food to be found, however, aside from the subway which is extremely expensive. So far I've just been eating bread with peanut- or hazelnut butter but that's not really working. Thus I ask, what are your best and easiest take-away vegan meals?

Do you have a microwave in your dorm?
That kept me alive during university. Beans are pretty easy to cook in the microwave.
And then lots of nuts, which won't go bad quickly.
Take-away meals are going to depend very much on your region.

I still live with my parents, and take food with me from there. I do not have a microwave at the university, so any beans I'd bring would be cold.brimstoneSalad wrote:Do you have a microwave in your dorm?

Oh, that's easy then. You just need food that will be good to eat cold, and won't go bad quickly. And of course, will travel well.miniboes wrote: I still live with my parents, and take food with me from there. I do not have a microwave at the university, so any beans I'd bring would be cold.
I didn't mean heat beans in the microwave, I meant cook them. Starting from dried beans, in water, in the microwave for half an hour, etc.
Sandwiches are a good start, but you'll need to branch out a bit from there.
Do you have access to wraps/tortillas?
Salad wraps travel nicely. You can prepare tofu or hummus to put in them too.
EDIT: I see the problem
I interpreted this as "fast food", e.g. to order from a restaurant or something.miniboes wrote:Thus I ask, what are your best and easiest take-away vegan meals?
You can also get a vacuum flask or "thermos" and bring soup in that. Make sure it's really thick soup, otherwise you're just carrying around a lot of water. It's easy to drink out of on the go.

Alright, I'll try these out. Wraps and soups should be a nice way to consume some more vegetables. I was also thinking of just making some green smoothies and take them with me.
Have you seen Greger's new video on that by the way? I thought it was really interesting.

Good idea. I'd make them cold and keep them in a vacuum flask. Something like that sitting around all day in a warm bag might not be great.miniboes wrote:I was also thinking of just making some green smoothies and take them with me.
Here's another trick: Puree some veggies, and then use them as a liquid components to make some whole grain bread.
If you put enough spices in it, and a bit of oil or nuts, the bread can be a decent snack even without worrying about any dips.
Nice! But... where's the next video?? I'm on the edge of my figurative seat here.miniboes wrote:Have you seen Greger's new video on that by the way? I thought it was really interesting.

Never did nutritional research have this much suspensebrimstoneSalad wrote:Nice! But... where's the next video?? I'm on the edge of my figurative seat here.miniboes wrote:Have you seen Greger's new video on that by the way? I thought it was really interesting.

So the conclusions is: green smoothies are awesome, but don't add apples?

Thanks for that. I wouldn't have seen it for a while yet.
The apples are what I would have expected, although the berries are a pleasant (slight) surprise. I've been recommending berries over 'junk' fruit like apples for a while now, so now I have yet another reason to give.
I'm a little puzzled about what to make of bananas now, though.
