Stupid Feminist Comments

Post by DiscreteElite_ » Sun Aug 23, 2015 11:36 pm

Even though The Vegan Atheist focuses on vegans and religion, I feel as if you could easily make a series called "Stupid Feminist Comments." This would focus on western feminists that say that they live in a rape culture (despite it being outlawed) and other illogical things. What do you guys think?

What are your views on feminism?

There is still sexism and problems with rape in western cultures. Just because things can be much worse for women in less enlightened countries, doesn't mean women should just 'put up with it' and be satisfied with what they have. All feminists I know are deeply concerned about the issues women have in other countries and try to help in what way they can.
I think you may be mistaking feminism with something else.
Feminism means equal opportunites for women, nothing more.

I don't think he should take a stand on that, it's too polarizing, and doesn't have anything to do with veganism or atheism.

If he makes a video about stupid feminist comments, he'll lose a bunch of subscribers on that side. If he makes a video about stupid MRA comments, he'll lose a bunch of subscribers on that side.

Taking a side on this issue is usually suicide. ;)

Agreed, though, Feminism (the action "advocacy of women's rights [to be equal to that of a man].") =/= Feminism (the movement, which consists of many different ideals, and those who identify as part of the movement, take action in the name of the movement that does not always fall under Feminism[the action] - Especially considering in the western world. There are little-no legal-rights that men have that women do not.. As far as I'm aware..) In recent years, and even though-out history, self-identified Feminists have gotten the complete wrong idea. Thing such as:

Labeling things like, pornography, or any sexually-themed photograph/media, sexist. (usually only if it involves a female.) [too many sources to list..]

Creating incredibly sexist campaigns (and making things illogically gendered-issues.) such as "Teach *Men* Not to Rape"

Lying/Using False Statistics as justification for those sexist campaigns

Advocating for a Matriarchy, based on the grounds that males =/= females. Pushing the idea that a sex defines who you are. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matriarch ... st_thought]

Advocating Sexist Gender-Quotas as a 'solution' to the gender-pay-gap.

Many may say these are extremist feminists, or "not-true-feminists", but when you're talking about the actions of a movement... Eh. And these are often the views portrayed in the media and by "most" feminists as far as I see on the internet.
Personally, I think to stop the confusion, labeling myself as an Egalitarian helps a lot. And it is much more accurate, as I advocate for equal rights of anyone who is unrightfully being discriminated against regardless of gender/sex/sexuality/race/etc. Not specifically "womens" rights.

I agree, but you can't deny that they are feminists whether they're a batch of rotten apples or not. Regardless, it seems as if feminists have financially elected Anita Sarkeesian by giving her $158,922 for her Kickstarter fund of $6,000. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/56 ... ideo-games She cherry-picks video games to be sexist when they really aren't and she still gets overwhelming support.

Another example of modern feminists is Rebecca Watson. She said that, " . . . because I've heard that if a male atheist on YouTube goes too long without calling a woman a ***t, his balls will actually shrivel up and then tuck up inside of him forming what some call a 'mangina.'" Note, this was a blood cancer research video so she scared off a lot of potential supporters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XWjkqh85pw

Do these bad apples represent the majority of modern feminism? If so, I can't take them seriously because they heavily focus on issues that aren't sexist (manspreading, mansplaining, etc.) in which they are butthurt about it. I'd take them seriously if they were rational about it, but they resort to ad hominem attacks far too easily and won't use evidence.

Sadly, I'd say so... At least in (most of*) the western world. There are plenty of genuine womens-rights issues and activism going on in other parts of the world. But women do have equal rights to men here. (as far as I'm aware.)

Most 'Feminists' are trying to fight an impossible (incredibly improbable) battle, and come across as very authoritarian about it. They're trying to fight assholes (and often, falsely-brand decent individuals sexists/rape-apologists/misogynists/etc.)... It's like saying "There shouldn't be murderers!". A very 'no duh' statement. We condemn, and punish those who murder (-cough- as long as it's not in a slaughterhouse -cough-). It's against the law. And so is discrimination. Yet, there are always going to be people who don't care about the law, and break it. How can you fight that? (aside from education/mental-health-research/etc.)

Many 'Feminists' will use the wage-gap as evidence for gender-discrimination. However, we don't know if the wage-gap is accurate...
The method in which the wage-gap is calculated is by taking the median of salaries for each occupation and gender, and comparing them. Now, the first problem is that, getting the median for an occupation isn't very helpful. There is no "set-legal-wage" for each occupation. It's up to the employer, and usually already advertised before-hand. It would be just as easy to say that women generally are applying for lower-paid jobs than men. (I'm not saying that, I'm just saying that it's an equal possibility unless we get more data.) Neither is each job/job-requirements equal. It would also be just as easy to say that women are generally getting lower education than men. The analysis of the gender-pay gap by the Department For Culture, Media and Sport (UK) actually even acknowledges this, and writes:
The gender pay gap can be seen as a measure of gender equality in the workplace. However, there are several more factors to consider (labour market participation, educational attainment, and more). It is important, therefore, to look at more than just the gender pay gap when drawing conclusions about gender equality.

[https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... ay_Gap.pdf]

'Feminists' will also use gender-stereotypes as evidence for sexism against women. - The problem being that, there are gender-stereotypes for both genders. And both are sexist. It's not exclusively a women's issue.

So I'm not sure what exactly 'Feminists' in the western world are fighting for.

*My knowledge of government law doesn't really spread further than the UK, or the EU.

I'm not checking the link as there are a few women that pervert the word 'feminist' to mean something different. Let me explain.
If you believe women have the right to vote, you are a feminist. If you believe that women have the right to be free from violence and discrimination, then you are a feminist. It's pretty simple. Advocating for women to rule the world is NOT feminism.
