Happy New Year! and my "Catalogue of Radical Zines"

Post by NonZeroSum »

---

Happy almost New Year all, it’s been a funny ride finding the forum, just want to say thanks for all the really valuable discussions I’ve had here that have challenged and shaped my thinking more than you know.

Anywho, I was thinking about how good the Philosophical Vegan Wiki Table of Contents is shaping up, and I was looking around parts of my website I hadn’t updated in years, like my “Catalogue of Radical Zines,” thinking about how it can be improved.

Obviously the project goals are very different, but I liked how advice pages on lifestyle are separated from activist/advocacy approaches and then ethics again. For my page it’s similar to living well, practical work and theory. If anyone has any suggestions for how to improve the shape, format or language of my library for accessibility and usefulness, I’d love to read.

I was also embarrassed to find examples of zines I should never really have put up like Primitive Toothcare, I guess at the time I rationalized it as plants you could identify and chew like gum in between brushes, but the general sentiment of it is the kind that raw foodists promote who end up with several fillings down the line. So if you look around and see anything like that please let me know also, it’s hard to keep track sometimes.

So some comparisons then:

Philosophical Vegan Wiki

This is a meta-activism wiki, meant as a resource for vegans and our allies working toward environmental and animal welfare ends, but it may also be helpful as an information source for anybody interested in these topics. While we're happy for non-vegans to read the wiki and be convinced of veganism, the Wiki itself is written to provide more in-depth information for people already interested in the subject rather than as outreach, and as such the tone of articles is often very different from what we would recommend for outreach (beware: some articles may be slightly snarky).

The content of this wiki is primarily based on consensus formed on the Philosophical Vegan Forum, which represents the most reasonable and plausible interpretations of veganism relevant philosophical and empirical information we have come to. In contrast to a site like Wikipedia, you may notice the single-viewpoint represented in articles; this derives from the consensus process. Rather than present a jumble of arguments and leaving the reader to work out which is correct, we establish this through argument and review on the forum. When we find new arguments, the consensus may shift, so please visit the forum and let us know if you disagree with anything you see here. A strong consensus is reflected by a very authoritarian tone (e.g. there are no two sides to the fact that the mammals and birds humans farm are sentient and feel pain: this is non-controversially true) a weaker consensus is reflected by a more moderate tone (e.g. it's less clear if the same is true of insects; there's scientific uncertainty there, but please try to be nice to them in case they are sentient). We do not pretend to be unbiased; we are pro-vegan, specifically from an ethical perspective, and we are in favor of changes that bring people closer to veganism for reasons of environmental ethics, animal ethics, and even health.

There are three overarching core principles that inform the consensus here, and these are not going to change:

• Non-Violence: We do not advocate or condone violence, even against animal abusers.
• Honesty: We do not believe dishonesty, whether in sophistry or pseudoscience, is beneficial for the vegan movement. A significant part of this Wiki is dedicated to debunking bad vegan arguments which we believe are counterproductive because we want people to use better methods. Dishonesty makes vegans look bad, and harms our credibility.
• Pragmatism: We are interested in doing the most good, and saving the most lives. Sometimes that happens by asking for less than what we want (e.g. go vegetarian or to try Meatless Monday) because it may result in more people changing and saving more animals overall vs. telling them to go vegan. Other times the most good may be achieved by working with people we don't agree with. Pragmatism doesn't always mean being nice, and shaming may have its place in certain circumstances, but it usually means at least being nice to carnists who represent the cultural majority (for whom shaming is counter-productive). Pragmatism often also means not obsessing over purity; the perfect can be the enemy of the good. Sometimes it even means siding against a badly behaved vegan.

Catalogue of Radical Zines

https://activistjourneys.wordpress.com/bank-of-ideas/

Recent Radical zinesters work categorised by subject.
A source of inspiration for writing the compilation zine series Activist Journeys,
Copyleft zines that have been given the all clear to share for free as a resource.
Onscreen viewing is almost finished, just need to print into a booklet and publicize now.

When it’s finished this page is hopefully going to be the most important on my blog, it comes down to why one writes, not only how you can improve the work you put out there, but the reasons you go into a project or event in the first place, and what ideas and tools you can bring with you to help you along the way.

I’m going to try and split it down into 3 categories but these are open to change:

1. Having an experience in order to record events, (Studying)
o This could be putting yourself on the ground to record research or media.
2. Writing to record an event after the fact (Living well)
o How to draw the truth out of a specific experience.
3. Writing to serve a function, group together ideas (Practical Work)
o How to draw together many experiences into one coherent idea, that can be used as a tool.

Any useful articles on the process can go into Creating Culture.

About

This blog was started a year ago in attempt to make available as many zines as possible that were lost when zinelibrary.info went offline, I scooped up all the zines under the label Interpersonal, now I think I have the biggest collection of Survivor Resources on the web including Post-traumatic Growth and Resilience, so when I find deadlinks to zinelibrary on important website resource pages I can point it out and link them here.

In my searching the web for copyleft downloadable zines I found a treasure chest of resources at archive sprout distro, (if you ever want to easily send one of the zines you find on here to a friend without the hastle of printing to correct proportions yourself, try heading over to sproutdistro). Anyways I enjoyed creating a page that could hold 100s of downloadable zines so much, I started making more from this archive.

It’s been nice being able to adapt, create and link to friends so easily. Home printing just burnt through my wallet (what with all the black images), and sending it to the printshop always came back with mistakes. So I’m editing some of the zines myself to clear them up and invert the black backgrounds (witch hunt).

Now I’m hoping to expand from my Free Zine Library archiving into new areas, by creating a Catalogue of Radical Zinesters Work, which lists authors and their work alphabetically, with links directly to the authors website, plus a ‘Catalogue of Radical Zinesters contacts.’

In doing so I’m hoping to create a space where radical writers can come together and find collaborators to work on new projects together.

At the centre of it all is still the Catalogue of Radical Zines to be a resource for budding activists, and a source of inspiration for those unexperienced at journalistic writing, but wishing to submit to the compilation zine series Activist Journeys, a place to expand on experiences, where we’re going as a movement, what sustains you? and what motivates you as an individual?

That’s all for now, make contact, spread the word, read, network, submit, buy, copy and grow!

What is a Zine?

Zines are self-published magazines. Most often, they are photocopied half-size booklets or pamphlets. For us, we trace the history of zines to the DIY punk scene and the production of zines as a way of transmitting information. Zines have been used by anarchists for decades as a way of circulating information and sharing ideas and analysis.

Grassroots Feminism

• Please upload your projects (be it zines, Ladyfest events, media,...), interviews you have done, resources you find useful and join the grassroots feminist community!
• Grassroots Feminism takes as its starting point the belief that today’s grassroots women's/feminist cultural production and practices are worthwhile and need to be documented. By providing an interactive network portal and research platform, the goal is to make the work and activism of transnational feminists more accessible, as well as to establish a “living history” archive.
• Working towards the recognition and renewal of the contemporary feminist movement, the aims of the web site are:
- to archive activities of the grassroots feminist movement worldwide (be it cultural, activist or political)
- to provide and share information and resources on feminist practice and theory
- to offer possibilities for exchange, networking and interaction so we can connect across borders and re-envision feminist politics
- to encourage the participation and acknowledgement of young feminists
• Its overall vision is to establish a lively network of grassroots feminists throughout the world.
• You can log in, list your own projects, search for projects, resources, interviews and access various archives we are about to establish, namely Ladyfest, zine, music, grassroots media archives – with your help and input! Please let us know what you think!

News From Nowhere

Liverpool's Radical & Community Bookshopnot-for-profit · a worker's co-operative · committed to social change

http://www.newsfromnowhere.org.uk/

News From Nowhere Radical & Community Bookshop has served Liverpool, the North West, and beyond, with the best in radical literature since 1974.
It's run on a not-for-profit basis by News From Nowhere Co-operative - a women's collective of five permanent, paid bookshop workers. Very often we have volunteer help too.

What's so radical about NFN?

Answer? The books we stock & the way we work mean that we are not your average bookshop.

We are ...
• ...a workers' co-operative - The bookshop is owned & managed collectively by the paid workers - tasks, responsibilities & decision-making are shared.
• ...not for profit - No-one makes money out of the bookshop. Any profit remains within the business, paying for essential running costs & building up our stock. (Workers earn equal rates of pay - currently minimum wage.)
• ...committed to social change - We hope that the literature we stock empowers & inspires people to make positive changes to the world - from challenging the power of corporate capitalism to breaking down prejudiced attitudes to others & ourselves. Over the years we've supported and promoted many struggles for justice - including anti-apartheid, Troops Out (of Ireland), the Liverpool Dockers, and currently the Stop the War campaign. We refuse to stock anything that is oppressive - racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise.
