Is it irrational or egocentric to mourn a loved one?

Post by Jebus »

I think there are two (closely related) reasons people get depressed after losing a close friend or family member:

1. We are upset because our own lives won't be the same as when that person/pet was alive.
2. We feel bad because of the memory of how that pet/person suffered and how s/he would have liked to still be alive.

With regards to point 1 although such emotions are normal, are they not an example of selfishness/egocentricism/ or perhaps Randian self-interest considering the millions of others who have lost even closer/younger loved ones under even more tragic circumstances?

With regards to point 2, considering the thousands of human and non-human animals who have suffered more (and/or more recently) is it not irrational for me to be mourning my loved one?
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:

2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.
