Yemen - the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.

Post by NonZeroSum »

As a result of the conflict:

An average of 75 people are being killed or injured every day.

An unprecedented cholera epidemic - More than 500 dead in one month, says UNICEF, that's almost 1 person every hour and more than 150,000 suspected cases, people rithing in pain in field hospital beds hoping to recover.

War is pretty nasty. All of these political and religious ideologies fighting it out, and the people suffer.

Do you see any solutions on the horizon? What do you think are the ultimate causes?

Yemen is the forgotten war in the Middle East that nobody really knows about or pays attention to.

In general, the perception in the western world is that there is always violence in the Middle East - that's how it's always been, and that's how it will always be. That's not true, though.

Whenever there's any terrorist attack in the west that kills a dozen people, everyone rallies around whatever country was targeted (like Paris). But stuff like that happens everyday in the Middle East, and it's just ignored. Yemen in particular is ignored, because the US is allied with Saudi Arabia for oil and money. >.< The government literally values oil over human rights.

I don't know the whole history of Yemen and it's challenges economically, but what I know of the conflict with the Shia Houthis in the South is they fought a war for independence which they basically won when they signed a peace treaty, but aren't internationally recognized, but skirmishes still flare up. The problem being with that instability, Yemeni politicians have been corruptly making deals with the Houthis to withdraw the army and cede various peices of land to get kickbacks, I don't know who from, maybe Iran or individual business people, but bizarre troop movements have been documented and scandalized in the press. And some really dodgy dealing went wrong their last election because they allowed the Houthis to over-run the whole capital without putting up a fight.

Add to that Al-Qaeda are growing rapidly among the instability and the most drone striked country in the world, with the most civilian casualties, is only adding to that growth.

And then Saudi-Arabia using cluster bombs we sold them and brutal military warfare against the Geneva convention, generals swapping sides so the conflict goes on indefinitely and communities turning into militias willing to throw down their lives in stupid numbers to defend a meter of dirt, it's a huge mess.

Solution is putting pressure on the Saudis, to create safe zones, let in aid, re-start the peace process, and generally 'state-building' practices that get rid of nepotism, make sure dialogue stays open and curroption is easily identified and dealt with.
