I'm not very familiar with how the French system works. Will support for Hamon take votes from Macron and increase Le Pen's chances?

It will increase Le Pen's chances precisely because there will be no left option in the second round of voting. Which will dissuade those voters from going to the polls twice.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/794378/French-election-2017-dates-why-two-votes

You need an above 50% majority in the first round to win which has never happened before. Then the 2 highest polling candidates go to a run off. So it allows voters to register their true affiliation to a third party mandate like the New Anti-Capitalist Party and then vote the lesser of two evils in the second. But the two major establishment parties have fallen by the wayside, which means there is a high degree of undecided voters, so it's necessary to fight for a left option in the second round in Melenchon. Otherwise you will have another Trump with disenfranchised socialist voters staying home.

It happened before in 2002 where the National Front just passed the socialists in the first round of voting by half a percent, and the socialists came out in force to help the establishment conservative win by 82% because they knew what they were getting. But it's hard to tell who would be worse in economically far-right Macron and Fascist Le Pen.

Can you break down the main differences in the leading candidates?

I've heard one candidate wants to nationalize the banks, and I think that's a great idea (an industry where regulation is more important than innovation, that is essential to the national economy, and that has historically been irresponsible).
I hope France won't leave the E.U. though.

The fact that the media doesn't even mention Hamon is FUCKING DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's worse is calling Melenchon the "French Bernie Sanders" just lumping everybody in the left together. They are complete opposites - Melenchon is an establishment puppet pretending to be a communist, and Bernie is a Centrist/Centre-Left American Progressive.

Well there we go if even half of those 5% who voted Hamon strategically voted Melenchon we'd have a left option against Libertarian Macron now. But no all the major parties have backed Macron and with the history of the Front National in France it's likely to be another landslide. But we have just guaranteed 3 more weeks of fascist propaganda presenting as a viable alternative. I imagine an alliance would have dropped his polling and those 5% were likely hard line liberal social democrats and turn to Macron before ever voting Melanchon, but we'll never know. If you live in France or its overseas territiories get ready to resist a fascist upsurge and get ready to defend your livelihood with your unions.

I'll have a look for some good articles on the subject, I've just been watching the debates between the candidates, and their spokespersons on France24.

Breaking up the big banks so they're not too big to fail and public investment/control in at least one national bank is an old socialist idea that is gaining prominence again in America, UK and France. But those candidates have yet to win so far, I'll be out canvassing for Corbyn at a time of heightened political consciousness even though I know Labour probably doesn't stand a chance till 2022 when Conservatives cuts and fuck ups really start to bite the middle classes.

Macron is fervently Pro-EU and Le Pen the opposite promising a referendum if there is public support for it.

I would laugh too if that happened. Just so long as all those that voted/supported Hamon had left France. However, as for all those that voted/supported Melenchon, Le Pen, Fillon, Macron or any of the other establishment puppets, they can all die, children included.
