Some of those are hoaxes, and some are cases of mental illness.

Tests have showed that when people do that in controlled situations (monitored) they lose weight quickly, and without water dehydrate to potentially lethal levels after a few days. As far as I know every test of this has been canceled for medical reasons (the scientists saw the person was going to die, so they canceled the test, or the person being tested canceled it). It's possible to survive for a week or two without food, and only a few days without water, but it's very dangerous (it's just a very long fast).

Wikipedia's article on the topic is good: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inedia
Here are some highlights
Wikipedia wrote:Breatharianism is considered a lethal pseudoscience by scientists and medical professionals, and several adherents of these practices have died from starvation and dehydration.

Prahlad Jani is an Indian sadhu who says he has lived without food and water for more than 70 years. His claims were investigated by doctors at Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad, Gujarat in 2003 and 2010.[16][...]
The case has attracted criticism, both after the 2003 tests and the recent 2010 tests. Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, criticized the 2010 experiment for allowing Jani to move out of a certain CCTV camera's field of view, meet devotees and leave the sealed test room to sunbathe. Edamaruku stated that the regular gargling and bathing activities were not sufficiently monitored, and accused Jani of having had some "influential protectors" who denied Edamaruku permission to inspect the project during its operation.[20]

Jasmuheen (born Ellen Greve) was a prominent advocate of breatharianism in the 1990s. She said "I can go for months and months without having anything at all other than a cup of tea. My body runs on a different kind of nourishment."[21] Interviewers found her house stocked with food; Jasmuheen claimed the food was for her husband and daughter. In 1999, she volunteered to be monitored closely by the Australian television program 60 Minutes for one week without eating to demonstrate her methods.[22][23] Jasmuheen stated that she found it difficult on the third day of the test because the hotel room in which she was confined was located near a busy road, causing stress and pollution that prevented absorption of required nutrients from the air. "I asked for fresh air. Seventy percent of my nutrients come from fresh air. I couldn’t even breathe," she said. The third day the test was moved to a mountainside retreat where her condition continued to deteriorate. After Jasmuheen had fasted for four days, Dr. Berris Wink, president of the Queensland branch of the Australian Medical Association, urged her to stop the test.[24]

According to Dr. Wink, Jasmuheen’s pupils were dilated, her speech was slow, and she was "quite dehydrated, probably over 10%, getting up to 11%". Towards the end of the test, she said, "Her pulse is about double what it was when she started. The risks if she goes any further are kidney failure. 60 Minutes would be culpable if they encouraged her to continue. She should stop now." The test was stopped.[...]
As of 2012, four deaths had been directly linked to breatharianism as a result of Jasmuheen's publications.[31][32] Jasmuheen has denied any responsibility for the deaths.

Hira Ratan Manek (born 12 September 1937) claims that since 18 June 1995 he has lived on water and occasionally tea, coffee, and buttermilk. Manek states that Sungazing is the key to his health[46] citing Yogis, ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Mayans and Native Americans as practitioners of the art.[47] While he and his proponents state that medical experts have confirmed his ability to draw sustenance by gazing at the sun,[48] he was caught on camera eating a big meal in a San Francisco restaurant in the 2011 documentary Eat the Sun.[49][50]
People regularly die from this on their own. The people who don't die are sneaking food. When you cut off their food sources, they waste away quickly. Without water, it's even more dangerous.

This is one of the few things that, due to ethical reasons, scientists will not test to conclusion.

It's as if somebody claimed to be able to survive being shot in the head. Well, how do you test that? You can't, because if he's wrong, you just 'murdered' him.

There are many people making claims of that stuff. Also many people making claims to talk to gods or angels or demons, or to be able to have other magical powers like flight and walking through walls.

We can't just believe what people say when it conflicts with scientific evidence.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"

Living off sunlight is a very extraordinary claim, for which there is no good evidence. Read the Wiki page I linked, it goes over all of the main claims.
People try to do this and die regularly. These charlatans are not just gaining fame, but they're also killing people who follow their hoaxed examples.

yeah true but sometimes I wonder if maybe there is some truth in it...science don't own the truth and can't explain everything. + there is often 2 sides in science and it's hard to choose what side is the right

Science is provisional. It doesn't say things 100%. It says "this is probably true", like 99.9% chance to be true, or 99.999% chance, etc.
There's always a very small chance for it to be mistaken.
eloine wrote:and can't explain everything. +
How do you know? Maybe science can explain everything.
The only way to know if if you study every science in the world, but that's probably impossible for one person. :)

Which thing do you think science can't explain?
Some things aren't "explained" by scientific measurement just because we didn't study them yet, but still have simple explanations.
eloine wrote:there is often 2 sides in science and it's hard to choose what side is the right
On most issues there's just one side, in the scientific consensus. Usually it's 99.9% sure on one side.

Sometimes there are two ideas which are equal or almost equal. Like scientists are only 60% sure about something. In those situations, it can be more difficult to choose.

But about surviving on sun and air, that's one of those 99.999% things. Science is really sure about that.
Of course there will always be the chance that somebody has magical powers, but so far there's only evidence against it. So, it's a conspiracy theory.

It's like the chance that Obama is a reptilian alien Muslim. Maybe... but probably not. :D

Wouldn't it be cool to just survive on wind and sun? No eating, drinking.. the whole world could technically go vegan! But that's fantasy. But wouldn't it be cool to live in a world like that? Sleeping also sucks, so it'd be cool if we didn't have to do that either. But then again, sleep has changed some events in world history, so, it's a mixed bag.

that's your own point of view and your limited reality, it's doesn't mean it's the truth

I think what brimstone is trying to say is that surviving on sun and air is impossible, according to what the evidence and what the scientific consensus says (which are done by the professionals).

Saying it's his point of view and his limited reality, is your own respective point of view and limited reality as well.
It's easy to state the obvious. The fact is that his point of view is astronomically likely to be true according to evidence - and if you base yourself on evidence and scientific knowledge, then it's for you too.
