Share Your Recent Video Game Experiences

Post by Dream Sphere »

So, in similar fashion to the "Latest Movies Watched/Books Read/Songs Listened To" threads, I thought video games could use its own, since the other threads' topics that concern video games are more built around listing your favourites, rather than sharing the personal experiences you've had with video games.

So, here you can share any particularly interesting or exciting experiences you've had in games, or pretty much just basically share your progress in games you enjoy with the other gamers on this forum. The event or experience in question doesn't have to be a recent one, but it'd probably be more interesting for others to read if you remembered the event well enough to be able to provide some interesting details on your experiences with the video games you've played.

To start us off, I've been playing probably one of my favourite games of all time Rome: Total War recently, and have gotten the furthest in the campaign I've ever been able to get. To those who don't know, Rome: Total War's campaign is a mix of Turn Based/Management strategy on the campaign map, which revolves around managing settlements, moving/assembling armies/fleets, balancing your factions budget, carrying out spying/assassination operations, and diplomacy among other things. The map comprises of most of Europe, some of northern Africa, and Eurasia/Western Asia and is set a few centuries before the common era started. Then there's a real-time strategy part for the battles of your armies, which is pretty straight forward, but not too simple that only might/numbers would guarantee victory.

I chose to play this campaign as the Roman faction Brutii. There are three main Roman family factions displayed in the game of which are the Brutii, Scipii, and Julii in the game which are all in alliance with each other and the SPQR which only controls Rome, but the allied Roman factions eventually come to vie for power by conquering Rome themselves which would probably have to be done by betraying the other Roman factions.

In this campaign I've come to the part where the game has notified me that I have the public's support in capturing Rome and removing the other Roman factions, but I haven't chosen to do so yet, because I don't want to stretch my armies thin by fighting on too many fronts. Though, I have deployed spys and assassins to carry out missions in my allies/enemies main cities/regions in the Italian regions.

The lands my faction has been able to conquer so far comprise of all of Greece's and Thrace's territories which resulted in those factions being wiped out. Those factions I had been at war with pretty much upon coming across them, but I've also taken all of the faction Macedon's territories because they chose to betray my faction. I've also taken all but one of Dacia's territories, as well as many of the Gaul's and Pontus'. I'm no longer at war with the Gaul, they're concerns now lay more with Britons advances into their territory, and Pontus' suffered a humiliating defeat trying to recapture Sardis, which resulted in my small army easily being able to capture their territory to the east of Sardis, as well as getting them to concede Nicomedia for a temporary ceasefire.

I'm unsure what exactly will lie ahead in my campaign, but if it comes to it, I feel I will probably be able to take on the other Roman factions if I need to, but I'll probably try to delay that until I have absolutely no other real threats to my empire. Pontus despite being one of the stronger factions still left in the game (Egypt, Briton, and Scipii being the other main contenders) will probably be easily manageable, but I won't re-initiate the war until half a dozen turns have passed or they choose to attack me. Briton isn't very worrisome for me now, due to them focusing their efforts mostly on the Gaul, Julii, and German factions. Egypt doesn't seem to be interested in going to war, though the Scipii may choose to attack them, in which case I'll try to snag a few of their territories, but they aren't currently much on my mind while planning my next moves for the game.

A little bit ago I was also enjoying playing the game Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. The combat system is great. I've heard people compare it to the Batman/Arkham games combat system, but I'm pretty sure the Nemesis system and other aspects of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor actually make the combat a bit more satisfying/complex than what I've seen from the Arkham games.

I've been able to depose all the Uruk War Chiefs in the starting area, and have unlocked the second area so far, but my playing of Middle-Earth: SoM has been put on hiatus for some time now, since my free time has shrunk over the past couple months and I've felt like spending more of it on Rome: Total War and other things rather than ME: SoM.

I'd really recommend ME: SoM to people who enjoy Middle-Earth lore, as well as Assassins Creed style traversing, (though don't expect to do really any sneaking through crowds like in AC, because there really aren't any opportunities to do so, though you can still be stealthy, just not like an Assassin blending in with the general public kind of stealthy,) and Batman/Arkham style combat, though, imo, the combat is actually better than the Arkham games.

do Android games count?

Since I dont really have times to spend hours of playing games, I prefer to play a sudoku on the mobile. Last game I kinda enjoyed on the phone was Dungeon Hunter 4.
Last real game I played was Neverwinter nights, which I adore, additionally because I could natively play it on Linux (Linux is what I use, I use windows only if I have to, and that in a virtual machine from within a linux host).

I remember, in Fallout New Vegas, recently heisting all the casinos, I pretty much killed everything in the Tops heist, for a very valid reason, as i needed a gun, so i got upstairs, bet the living hell out of two guards with fists and the pushabilitator mod, got his gun, came downstairs, got attacked by a guard because reasons, murdered all the guards, killed Benny, took the platinum chip, got upstairs, robbed the room with the cash monies, and got out.

The ultra luxe was simpler and easier, I just came straight in the cash monies room, sneaking, lock picked everything, got out.

The one that was most stressful was definitely Gomorrah, due to the cash monies room facing the lobby, with several armed guards, making seeing me easy. The cash room's door was much harder to access, requiring the stealthy elimination of a guard in the bar, going inside the room he is guarding, going upstairs, sneaking my way on a a "catwalk", going down a door, murdering the cash room guard before he sees you, lock-picking the cash room door, sneaking inside and taking all the loot.
Which I all did, and the feeling of waltzing out the front door, having bloody robbed the whole casino without anyone noticing felt freaking awesome. My fortune in cash monies (For all teh casinos) was around 90K. 8-)

So I recently got Star Wars Battlefront and I like it very much. My favorite aspects are the aircraft-combat, the ability to play as various aliens, and the visual realism. The environments are unbelievably realistic-looking; the dirt, the leaves on the ground, the tree bark on Endor's redwood trees, lighting, etc.

What I dislike most about the game:

-Darth Vader's voice acting is terrible! :x Darth Vader doesn't sound at all like he does in the movies! His dialogue is sometimes rather silly too. If you play this game and hear Darth Vader speak, and then compare his voice to how it sounded in the Original Trilogy & Star Wars Rebels, it's very different. By the way if you're a Star Wars fan and haven't seen Rebels, I highly recommend it. Darth Vader is voiced by James Earl Jones and sounds exactly like he does in the movies! :)

-I need to reach Level 50 to unlock the Twi'lek lady as a playable rebel character. Why!? :( I want to play as the Twi'lek lady right now! Does anyone know some kind of clever strategy to quickly reach level 50? Fortunately I did progress from level 1 to level 5 in just one day of playing, so maybe it's not that difficult.

I beat Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Proud mode, got Ultima, beat all optional bosses, and got all the gear. What do I win?

I've been playing a lot of Dark Souls. Is anyone else here a fan? Also how is Mass Effect: Andromeda, I know that there were some fans of that series here? How does it stack up to the other ME games?

I hope this is the right BBcode for a spoiler. Edit: it isn't but I'm leaving it as is and hope that anyone who doesn't want spoilers can skip over it.

In Dark Souls I've beaten the gargoyles in the undead parish and am now thinking of either fighting the demon down by the blacksmith and proceeding into dark root garden or running through the new londo ruins and to try not to die a thousand times from those annoying ghosts. Any ideas on what I should do? I've noticed that I can also go to a cemetery near firelink shrine, but I think the enemies might be too difficult there. My character is around level 35, with a +5 longsword and slightly upgraded armour.

I haven't played any of the Dark Souls games. The closest I've come to playing a Dark Souls was playing Skyrim, and noticing that there is a perk in the conjuration magic skill tree called "Dark Souls". I don't remember what the benefit of that perk was, or if I ever selected it. Why did you scratch out that last paragraph of yours?

Regarding Mass Effect: Andromeda, I'm very fond of it and enjoying it greatly. It has some flaws, but so far in my experience they've been few and minor. I really couldn't care less about the "shitty facial animations" that ME fans keep whining about.

This game has a lot to enjoy:
-Massive open world gameplay on many planets. This game is like a sci-fi version of Skyrim. :D
-Satisfying combat. I like to carry 4 guns into battle, use the sniper rifle to do headshots from long distance, and then continue my fights at closer range with a mix of combat and tech abilities. :)
-Interstellar exploration is so much more fun in this game than the previous MEs! You see the Tempest travelling at FTL speeds, and see the scenery change outside of your windows depending on where you are in the Heleus Cluster.
-Good story and characters.
-Enjoyable romance so far. I'm currently pursuing romances with 3 different alien women. I've flirted with at least 7 women. Most of all I'm interested in my turian companion! :P

This new game is a must-have for any ME fan!

I scratched out the paragraph because I thought the code I was using was a spoilertag at the time (as not to spoil any surprises of the game for anyone,) not a scratchout tag.

Let me tell you that Skyrim is vastly different compared to Dark Souls. They're both medieval fantasy games, for sure, but the combat is so much more fun in Dark Souls, and the game is really difficult, but rewarding for it and luckily not ridiculously impossible with the right technique/skill employed.

DS isn't as large as Skyrim, but there is a lot of variety in the enemies still, and while DS is less about adventure, the atmospheres of the different environments are very well done. The leveling system is more like a classic RPG too, though I like both ES and DS levelling systems.

That's great to hear about Mass Effect. I figured as much, so I'll pick it up on Origin once I own a gaming laptop.

By the way, have you heard that the main team at Bioware is working on a new IP? I love the jump they made from Star Wars: KotOR to Mass Effect, so I'm very interested in what will come after ME.

You might say that. I've played the entire series—Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3, Bloodborne—dozens of times, including a few challenge runs, where I intentionally handicapped myself. In fact, I'm so fond of Demon's Souls that I earned the platinum trophy for all three region versions. At this point, I'm practically a living strategy guide for the series, having memorized the maps, item locations, and boss strategies. They're probably my favorite games in the last ten years, and I'm quite eager to see what FromSoftware has in store next.

It sounds like you live and breathe FS' games. :) Glad to see that there's someone so knowledgable about these games on this board. How many hours do you think you've logged in each one? Also, which were your favourites of these games?

An update on my play through, I've currently been doing loads of farming at the Undead Parish to get my endurance up to equip all the goodies I found in Darkroot Garden and the cemetary near Firelink Shrine. I'm trying to get my equip load high enough to both wear the full suit of Elite Knight armour, and weild the Zweihander along with my trusty knight's shield. Currently I'm guessing that I'll need to level up five more times to weild that sword, which is the only thing I can't quite carry with my current equip load, so I've been using a +5 Bastard Sword for the past while. I'm guessing I'll need around 115 000 souls to level up five times, but I think I can do that in tomorrow with time to spare.

By the way, do you know what those white circles that appeare are? They must be part of the online component, but I don't know what for. Also, is the locked part in Darkroot Garden a pvp place, or did I just happen opon some sacred place that npc non-hollowed humans would kill me for being in?
