Flat Earth House

Post by orcsanddragons »

So, I live a few blocks from this thing and have to see it almost everyday. It went from being hilarious to down right annoying after over a year. The people who own it also have several trucks that are obnoxiously decorated the same way that they drive and park around town as well.

For the life of me I cannot understand the appeal of this theory. I mean in other crazy theories at least some "secret society" or whatever is benefiting (usually financially) from a conspiracy. What does the shadowy society get from lying about the earth being round? The only argument I have ever heard is from some crazy extremist christian perspective that the "one world order" wants to take out Christianity and replace it with the religion of science. Yea it's batsh** insane.

I thought some might find this house hilarious but also how do you guys feel about flat earthers? Have you personally interacted with any? What "evidence" of a conspiracy have they given you?

Funny story man, we actually had a flat earther discuss the theory here about 2 years ago.
Here's the thread:

Maybe you can ask them some scientific questions regarding the shape of the earth that'll stump them. Or, maybe you can ask why they think it's important to know that the earth is flat.

And I've never seen a flat earther say the earth is motionless. . . that's new.

Aw nice thank you! I will be reading through that.

I have heard the motionless argument in the very crazy corners of youtube but yea it's a kind of recent thing.

This is in fact the truth. I am a member of this secret society - The Illuminati. We are all Freemasons who are plotting to bring about a socialist atheist New World Order and we have done this by telling you that the earth is round when it is actually flat.

We also faked the Moon Landing. We did this to cover up the fact that the Moon itself is a hologram and is used to cover up our secret base where we plot world domination.

But in all seriousness, conspiracy theories simply gain so much weight because people don't usually check whether something is true or not and simply assume it is because it has been told to them, most likely via email (as is how conspiracy theories are usually transferred). Just as how people just believe what they hear on the BBC, Fox News, CNN, or other mainstream media outlet and this influences their political ideology, they can just believe what they hear from Infowars, Smoloko, Tomatobubble, Natural News, the Flat Earth Society or another conspiracy theorist website/organization and not believe anything else because they believe it is being funded by the evil people who are out to get them.

From what I understand (and I am often wrong), the Flat Earth Society was started ironically. And today, many/most of the "Flat-earthers" are just ironically trolling people. The problem with being satirical too well, is of course, many people don't "get" the satire. (Poe's law) And sadly, some people (perhaps in an attempt to appear like they understand a concept they actually cannot grasp, just to appear more intelligent) fall into the trap. Your neighbor seems like the latter. (Or conversely, he's a hilarious version of the prior, but less likely in my opinion)

I think the satirists got bored and the torch is carried by legitimate loonies.

The appeal of believing it is flat is that some people like to be in on some secret and have special knowledge of the truth that none of the sheeple know. Even if they have to make up something to achieve that delusion.

We have a moon landing conspiracy theorist on the forum right now, same thing basically. There are literally retro-reflectors on the moon placed there by the missions. At least thousands of people have access to the necessary information to blow the thing out of the water if it were a fake... but nope, just a few people pointing at pictures and complaining about the shadows.

As to what the world government's motivations are supposed to be?

Most of them don't think about it that carefully, but I've seen the same explanations you have; the devil being in league with scientists to get people to stray from God by contradicting the Bible. And yet there are atheists who believe the Earth is flat too (the one in that thread was). Some vague nefarious motives from government is about all you'll get.
