AFAIK that's legit. And it teaches a good lesson; sometimes exaggerating and fabricating stories even if you think it represents the spirit of the truth is just sabotaging your cause when it's later revealed to be fraud.

There is a tale of the boy who cried wolf. In a similar sense, now that we know part of their story is not credible, we have little reason to trust in the credibility in the rest of it.

Right, but there are people who have not given ridiculous accounts who can corroborate some of the stories, and who are even critical of the exaggerated stories. There are people representing more of a middle ground account who speak against the exaggerations on both sides.
