Welcome to the forum Meganisoptera! Glad to see another person interested in this thread.

Your song.

Very upbeat and lively. Lots of engaging rhythms in the vocals, guitar, and drums, and nice fairly simple but catchy melodies for the guitar and vocals. I'm typically not a fan of these sorts of semi-monotone punk vocals, but these were above average for the style afaik, and somewhat enjoyable to me with the good rhythmic phrasing and good choice of melodies to sing. The saxophone was also a nice addition which spiced up the song and gave it more variety and probably replay-ability. It's not really my style, but it was good for what it is and I could see enjoying it as background music to an old skateboarding video-game. 7/10

My new song.

The instrumental electronic parts were actually very good, particularly around the middle of the song. It was stimulating and flowed well which good EDM usually does. I didn't like the vocals though. I'm not against electronic vocals or using lots of effects in general, these vocals just seemed a little weak underneath it all, and got kinda grating and annoying with some of its melodies. Most of the vocals during the chorus were kinda decent though. 6.5/10 if it had vocals I like it could be 7.5

Kinda lengthy, but I kinda feel a connection to this song. It gives me nostalgic vibes from some song I heard when I was younger (it wasn't this song of course). The instrumentals are varied and upbeat and very hardcore. Makes you feel like you're doing something cool. However, I never really liked screaming vocals. 8.9/10

Wow, I had that CD in high school. It's interesting going back and listening to music I liked a while ago. Now, I think Fred Durst's voice is kind of whiny at points. And, the lyrics are pretty mediocre. Also, some parts of the song feel like a mix of Rage Against the Machine and Korn ripoffs. So, I'm going with a 3/10.

A lot of emotion in the vocals, which I like. The riffs are bluesy and cool. I get a bit of a punk vibe too, good punk. I really liked the riff around 2 min in that is played elsewhere too. Very solid song, but nothing absolutely amazing either, really good still. 7.5/10

Here's an In Vain song with no harsh vocals.

Another lengthy song, but has nice slow guitar riffs. The vocals are hard to hear unless you're paying attention to them, but they are at worst competent. However, I feel the song drags a bit too much at times and gets a bit repetitive. 7.21/10

It's an above average A7x song. In particular I liked the tremolo riffs after the first solo section, and the second solo section, that's just about as dark/epic as I've ever seen them go. The clean vocals were as expected and pretty good. The harsh vocals were kinda expected but still a let down as they're of the less refined/controlled metalcore variety, the only part of the song I actually disliked. The first solo section was good but a little predictable, still A7x's harmonizing and lead guitars still sound good even when I can guess what they're going to play easily. The riffs were competent, but the only ones that really stood out were the tremolo riffs, not that those tremolo riffs are better than other ones of similar variety, I just didn't expect it and it was good/competent and well executed so that was a big plus.

7/10 with those weak harsh vocals. If he had used better harsh vocals it could be a 7.5 or 8/10

Does anyone have any ideas on how to revitalize this thread? The main thing I'm willing to change personally is being less of a Simon Cowell in my ratings of others' songs, lol. I won't just sugar coat things either, I will remain sincere, but I honestly don't like being as much of a harsh critic now as I have been in the past. I also just want to say sorry if I bothered anyone with my harsh criticisms from the past too. I can take harsh criticism of my music decently, but I have a pretty high tolerance in this particular realm of criticism. Of course it's different for others and I should have been mindful of that, I can see how the comments I made on some songs could have upset people, so I'm very sorry for that.

I'm happy to review anything that isn't a novelty song and not really lengthy (like over an hour or two.) Unfortunately, while I'll try my best to bring variety in my song selections, the majority of songs in the pool I'm drawing from still have some prevalent characteristics which aren't liked much by most members here. I'll try to interject either a non-harsh vocal metal song every other song from me, or better yet a non-metal song in its place.

I appreciate everyone who's contributed to the thread within its rules. Z... too for the few non-novelty songs he posted, so everyone, honestly. In particular I really liked Mr. Purple's in depth reviews and how passionate he seemed about it all, even though he often didn't really like my selections. In saying that I would also be open to having this thread be somewhere where people can discuss more about what styles of music which they like, why, and which aspects of certain styles that they dislike and why, for two main reasons. 1.) sometimes for people to choose songs more likely to be liked by other members, and 2.) for opportunities to challenge a person on what they dislike to see if they could begin to like it or just start to see it differently for the better.

Besides those reasons I just find hearing about others' subjective perceptions of media, in particular music, to be interesting. I'll try to explain myself better in both reviews and if I'm asked any questions. E.g. on blast beat drums and harsh vocals throughout a whole song being something I like. I said earlier I like it because it gives a harsh/intense and minimalistic/cold atmosphere, but to expand on that while it's not the only way to get harsh/cold/intense feelings and emotions from music it's a specific way with its own unique personality. The drums blasting non stop can make it feel like you're rushing on a wave being carried by it, but it's not the focus, it just provides a background rush that creates a specific setting to view other aspects of the music from. It basically wouldn't work alone, but it complements the main focus of the music which are the melodies and rhythms of the guitars/keyboards etc. and vocals.

I like harsh non-melodic vocals as they have a specific tone to them with inflections/tones that can't be achieved otherwise. It's just another style to me, it works in some cases, it doesn't in other contexts to me. Often it's the rhythmic delivery and tone/inflections which are what's focused on in harsh vocals. Often by themselves they wouldn't make much sense, but they add to the arrangements in a song, I often see how the rhythm and the tone fits with the other rhythms and tones of the song and many bands make good work of applying interesting rhythms to the vocals which complement the other rhythms in the song, sometimes in a style of the vocalist giving a rhythmic line and then letting the instruments' rhythms talk back to the vocalist next and they then continue to trade off and sometimes go at the same time, like a duet between the vocalist and the instruments rhythmically speaking.

Also, if someone would like me to change my song for review, I can do that.

I'm sorry for not being as active as I can in this thread, the problem is that I've almost completely run out of songs to post and I have to reach in the far spaces of my memory to find new ones.

I don't mind your criticisms, I mean, they aren't songs I made, so it's not like you can hurt my feelings, unless you say something like "Nyeh only dumbasses listen to this drive!"

But I have an old song you may've heard of.

Anyways for your new song, I like the starting riffs, and it remains fairly stagnant throughout the song (not that that's a bad thing). Not a fan of the vocals, they sound very uncomfortable, hard to understand, and honestly the hardcore vocals don't match with the softer instrumentals. I like some of the whirring sounds between verses, but overall, I think the vocals ruin it for me. Song sounds good on 1.25x speed though.
