I like all sorts of music so I'll just make a few suggestions that may not make other peoples lists.

Hard heavy metal music.

Strapping Young Lad; Heavy as a Real Heavy Thing

Bang your head HARD, young man.

One of the best bands and albums ever... IMO.

Radiohead; Kid A

Feeling a little rebellious?

Rage Against the Machine; The Battle of Los Angeles or their; Greatest Hits

Lastly...

Tool; Lateralus

My favorite albums (sorry to give a big list):
BT – This Binary Universe
Sigur Rós – ( )
Sigur Rós – Ágætis Byrjun
Trentemøller – The Last Resort
Jon Hopkins – Immunity
Boards of Canada – Tomorrow's Harvest
Tim Hecker – Virgins
Tim Hecker – Ravedeath, 1972
Darkside – Psychic
Autechre – Amber
Biosphere – Substrata
James Holden – The Inheritors
Bonobo – Black Sands
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
Andrew Bayer – If It Were You, We'd Never Leave
Portishead – Dummy

It's a pretty diverse list with regards to genres, so I would say: don't be turned off if you don't like some of them. Some albums are really hard to get into (like Tim Hecker), so you probably won't appreciate it at first. :P

If you're looking for unique you can try out Sybreed. They combine heavy metal with machinery music to produce 'cyber metal'.

They have both light and heavy songs.

Light; AEON https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3269wR6Kg_M
Doomsday Party https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Seh4vly7Ocw

Heavy stuff; Emma-0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzEyvg2rqf0 (Great lyrics)
Ego by pass generator https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9PASK8iaTk (this song got me into them)

Maybe this is just supporting my home town but if you like kinda insightful and catchy, rap/hip hop then you might like Sand People. Their an independent rap group in Portland Oregon so of course not many people have heard of them but here are some songs of theirs I like:

How Come https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSx-dnIYVK4

Dapper Mob https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsbeI69qb6E

I don't care https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc5jy3eHx5o

Fiddler on the roof https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u28VgCYxXo

I didn't listened to any rap/hip hop until I discovered a kind of instrumental hip hop in the 'electronic world'. Artists like Flying Lotus:

Any (contemporary) classic lovers here? Here are some of my favorite songs:
Max Richter - Europe, After The Rain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_QMKuVPWMY
A Winged Victory for the Sullen - We Played Some Open Chords And Rejoiced, For The Earth Had Circled The Sun Yet Another Year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHYfqG3fvIU
Ludovico Einaudi - Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_SGEE02NlM
Nils Frahm - Says https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIwwjy4slI8
The are not purely classical, they do have electronic elements in it as well.

I also haven't mention The Flashbulb yet, here is a song from his album Opus At The End Of Everything:

My favourite band is also probably the most eclectic band I like, so I think they would be a great candidate for a thread on broadening musical horizons since their styles range from Black, Heavy, and Doom Metal, to Jazz, Folk, Prog-rock, Psychedelic-rock, Electronic, and Romantic Era Classical among quite a few other styles.

Their name is Sigh. Some of their stuff is a lot more accessible than some of their other stuff, but I guess that depends on the individual's taste, though if you don't like harsh metal vocals, then you won't like, or at least find hard to enjoy 95% of their stuff.

My 3 favourite albums of theirs are In Somniphobia, Imaginary Sonicscape, and Hail Horror Hail. All those albums are among their more avant-garde stuff (except the latter one a bit) and are the ones I would recommend newcomers to Sigh to check out first. In Somniphobia has a big Prog-Rock, and Jazz influence. Imaginary Sonicscape has quite a bit of Psychedelic Rock influence mixed with the Heavy, and Black Metal. Hail Horror Hail in some ways is a bit more atmospheric than the others in a number of songs as its concept is to be "like experiencing a horror movie without the pictures."

Also, if anyone wants some good Black Metal recommendations, I may have what you're looking for.
