True, it's a tool for good or evil, it's all in how it's used.
Of course, refraining from spreading good messages won't stop the bad ones. We need to out-populate the bad ones with real science memes.

I'm going to respond, in the not supposed to respond to open letters section  but maybe someone with the capability could move this to a separate thread titled MEME WARS!! or something. ;)

Is it really just a numbers game? If someone will accept on face value that a bee shouldn't be able to fly because of a meme claiming "physics" , would an opposite meme using real physics change their minds?

Thanks to algorithms on most social networking sites, only those of us who either avoid them( the sites), or intentionally like opposing ideas will see anything that doesn't fall into our comfortable bubble.

I think the sad truth is, the number of people who actively go outside their comfort zone to challenge their own deeply held beliefs is abysmally small.

Dear mom,

You were a deeply disturbed individual. But you tried your best, and I think that is all we can hope for. If nothing else, you taught me how not to be like you. So that's a plus.

Dear lady at the pool,

For fucks sake, it's called sunscreen, or keep your damn kids out of the pool once they reach the same shade of red as a damn strawberry! I walked by you at three-ish, and your one child was already red as hell. Why on earth would you stay out there another five hours??!! And another question, how the hell are you not burnt, but both of your kids are? Obviously you knew enough to stay out of the sun, but didn't think it was important for your smaller, more susceptible to burning progeny?

I wish i could slap one person a month. You would win this month. And I'd take an advance for another month, just to make it a double slap.

Please stop breeding,

PsYcHo.

But haven't you heard? Sunscreen causes cancer, not the sun...

Really, it's so annoying to get teased when I reapply my sunscreen. I think i get more snarky remarks about that than about veganism.

Hi Mr. ------,

Greetings,

I was doing the summer assignment you sent us. I was reading the textbook pages, and at the bottom there was a passage from this guy called "Paul Geddes". And he's basically rattling on about how people who want to protect the environment are against technology somehow, because why? I don't know that's never stated. So basically he mentions how he has some environmental concerns to make it seem like he's a moderate, but he doesn't even mention climate change at all in the entire BS paragraph. So I see there's a caption at the bottom like "this guy is from FREE, the foundation for research of economics and the environment". So, I google this organization, because I am curious what it is. And so there is this article by the founder of the organization titled "worried about climate change".

So I'm like "oh, worried about climate change, sounds some like BS title, i bet that title is bullshit". I'm like "it's probably going to say like they're worried about the environment changing, but not mention human activity causing the change or saying there's no evidence for human activity causing the change". It's even worse. So I'm reading it, and it's like "we are correcting the statement that we don't believe in climate change, we do agree that data is conclusive that temperatures have risen in Montana". And I'm still not convinced, like, they're probably going to say it has nothing to do with people. But NO. I keep reading, and they're like "climate change is real, but warmer is better". And then they list all these tiny positive consequences of a warmer climate while completely ignoring the negative ones and not even mentioning the possibility of their existence.

And then I'm so astounded by this, and I decide to look into this organization more. So I google "donors to FREE" and this article comes up by greenpeace that states they got about a million and a half dollars from the Koch brothers, oil company CEOs. So this organization is literally FUNDED by individuals who have a vested interest in the continued usage of fossil fuels. Literally FUNDED. So this guy quoted in the textbook, literally has what that same textbook describes as a VESTED INTEREST in the statements he is producing. WTF

why is this in a textbook supposedly educating us about the environment. if it is going to be in at all, it should be prefaced with THIS ENTIRE STATEMENT IS FUNDED BY THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEIR MONETARY INTERESTS OVER THE PLANET. THE STATEMENT IS NOT UNBIASED. instead, it is put there right next to a statement with real facts and credibility about the topic, as if it is equally valid, as if to say "oh, these 2 opinions are the same in validity, you choose what you believe". But one opinion isn't even HONEST about it's beliefs; it's just putting out propaganda funded by the companies it is essentially writing about.

thanks
