Re: Ecosia: Does it do anything?

I clean bottles with liquid in, and then recycle them. You don't want to make things difficult for the recyclers. If something has messy oily liquid or is very dirty, maybe trash it. It's also a good idea to ask your local recycling centre a few questions here and there from time to time. I've been ...

Re: Ecosia: Does it do anything?

Heating is quite significant. Looking into ways to reduce your heating CO2 footprint is well worth it. If you own your home, things like buying insulation or at heat pump are worth looking at. Other things like wearing extra jumpers are a factor. You can also reduce your heating CO2 by living in a s...

Re: Showering

The total amount of water used in showering is quite small compared to the total amount of water humans use. Watering the garden/sprinklers, agriculture, and mining and other industrial processes use a lot more. So I think the amount of water in showers is not a big deal environmentally or ethically...

Re: What kind of water do you drink?

1 milligram per litre of iodine is approximately the right amount - less than that might make sense if you just wanted to kill bacteria and knew there weren't any viruses. Higher than that might make sense, if, say, you were drinking from a very dubious source while traveling to a foreign country, a...

Re: What kind of water do you drink?

We get 20 litre bottles (of the type found in offices with a little tap at the bottom) delivered to the house. I also take tap water and filter it, then put iodine in it. If your water comes out the tap clear and transparent, iodine may work on its own. The iodine also has a benefit that a vegan die...

Re: Why is it unethical to use leather derived from animals who are not killed for leather?

A key question here would be whether the meat industry gets money for leather, or whether it gives it away. If the meat industry gets NO money at all for the leather, then it is fair to say that using the leather doesn't cause suffering directly (except a little bit in the type of way Jebus mentione...

Re: Democracy - Does it have a chance?

I am from the UK. I voted for AV. I lived in the UK at the time of the vote. I think it was a bit better. Electoral reform clearly isn't going to be on the agenda any time soon, given the margin for defeat in 2011, and the current preoccupation with Brexit and perhaps also climate change. No-one's t...

Re: My Actual Libertarian Experience

PS I know libertarians hate high taxes, so I appreciate that this is a hard sell, but my point being is that it's a lesser of evils vs things being banned and vs the huge government that will be needed later to defeat climate change if we don't act now.
