Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

Actually, I thought she was a bit harsh on solar. "Most solar technology just isn't viable at a large scale" wasn't a fair statement in my view. The things I learned from the video were that in theory you could just tip all the nuclear waste in the ocean and according to her it would be OK (ish). An...

Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

Unnatural Vegan recently uploaded a great video on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8_u5TqnznA I like that she addressed the confusion on relative vs. absolute risk A great video thanks, and I will check out more of her stuff since I'd never heard of her. Must take a huge amount of hours of w...

Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

Here's the problem in a nutshell: "How many people has Chernobyl killed so far? We’ll probably never know. That’s partly because even 40,000 cancer deaths are less than 1 percent of the cancer mortality expected in the affected population. Statistically, the deaths are undetectable. Even if they wer...

Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

It sounds like you know more about it than me. My view is that Chernobyl killed hundreds or thousands so perhaps it was 100 or perhaps it was 3000 and it can't be known for sure because we know x people died from cancer but we don't know what portion would have died from cancer anyway because of the...

Re: Do you ever feel that doing good is a waste of time?

I do sometimes feel this way, but I try to think it's better to have a limited effect than none at all.

Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

BTW I saw the Vlogbrothers made a video about Chernobyl, but I didn't see it yet. How many deaths were from Chernobyl? I heard some estimate it at 50. The number of people killed by Chernobyl is in the hundreds or thousands. It's difficult to get an exact number because it's difficult to know of th...

Re: Do the little things matter?

It matters, but a larger amount matters more... The animal products industry presumably receives some money for gelatin. The way I say it, if they get say 90% of their money from the meat, 5% from gelatin (or bones or other remains used to make it) and 5% from other, than gelatin is responsible for ...

Re: Showering

Yeah you want to have the option to take the house off the market and try again 6 months later - by which time almost all people looking won't have seen it being on the market without success before. It's not as good if you need to sell immediately. But I think you might want to make more of an effo...

Re: Artificial Intelligence

Putting an artificial intelligence in a box so that they can't get access to the internet or the outside world is not as easy as you think. Sam Harris and Eliezer Yudkowsky discussed this in a podcast I listened to. Nick Bostrom also discusses this and related issues in his book SuperIntelligence. T...

Re: Ecosia: Does it do anything?

I honestly don't know much about the history and I'm not sure I can speak about the forum accurately to be honest. It seems to change over time.
