Re: Soft Sciences Vs. Hard Sciences

I’d be interested in reading what other people on this forum educated in social sciences, such as EquALLity or Jebus , have to say about this issue. Brimstone, I see you are otherwise a smart guy, but your comments here seem arrogant, uninformed and even somewhat insulting. They make about as much s...

Re: Soft Sciences Vs. Hard Sciences

Here is the relevant Dubravka Ivsic's paper, Skok's Second Law is discussed beginning with the page 363. By the way, in the second paper I published, I even entertained the notion that the patterns I see in the toponyms are actually not statistically significant. So, I tried to calculate the p-valu...

Re: Soft Sciences Vs. Hard Sciences

You really need to study more astronomy. Ah, dude! I've put a lot of my time studying linguistics, I've put a lot of my time studying computer science, and I've put an insane amount of time studying various pseudosciences (Flat-Earth...). If that's not enough to have an educated discussion about ph...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

That's a misconception, much like Ken Ham's belief that evolution is "historical science" rather than experimental science. I was simply quoting what's written in both my sociology textbook and my psychology textbook. That's used as an example of the difference between observation and controlled ex...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

Also, let's face it, this "hard science"/"soft science" division can easily be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

We can't exactly submit your notion that "issa" has certain roots to the same kind of experimentation to prove or disprove it like we can with theories in physics, chemistry, biology, etc. In some natural sciences, like meteorology or astronomy, it's also impossible to experimentally test the theor...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

Lacking relevant information about what consensus is, though, of course it would be difficult to use that as a guide. That's true. It's very hard for me to figure out whether the bloggers who claim most social scientists agree anarchism isn't too harmful have a point or not. Though its utility it p...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

I've never seen such a blatant misrepresentation from someone If I actually misrepresented you, now it should be trivial to point out where. Honestly, it seems to me now you are using a dishonest manner to make an echo-chamber here in which everybody agrees with you not only about food ethics and a...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

I mean, let's face it, Red, our conversation here reads like this: Letting people hear both sides of the story has sometimes had negative consequences, here are examples:... Those aren't true examples. People didn't even hear one side of the story there. Though, admittedly, it's hard to make people ...

Re: Which Sciences Are the Most Useful?

A legitimate criticism of science requires an at least basic understanding of it. And the same goes with philosophy (for example, that solipsism is defined as a position that only self can be truly known). I've spent about half an hour trying to summarize the (what are here) possibly important point...
