Re: Nuclear Energy in 2019

My view is that Chernobyl killed hundreds or thousands so perhaps it was 100 or perhaps it was 3000 and it can't be known for sure because we know x people died from cancer but we don't know what portion would have died from cancer anyway because of the nuclear accident. I don't think there's any e...

Re: Do you ever feel that doing good is a waste of time?

Yep. But hey, if nuclear is doomed to be buried in fear mongering, maybe that's all the more reason to focus on reductions like veganism and being more efficient at home? We might be able to make solar work IF we're smarter about our energy uses... that's a big IF, but climate change isn't all or no...

Re: Do the little things matter?

And also worth noting: medicine is medicine, so it's exempt. Even if it's something very overt like a pig heart valve. You can get 100% vegan vitamins, but they might be a little more expensive and if you can't afford it then you shouldn't be expected to break the bank to avoid a trace of gelatin or...

@brimstoneSalad Great ideas! I didn't know you could turn the calories off like that. Thank you :)
No problem. Please update us on what your therapist thinks about these ideas if you get a chance. Always great to have some professional insight!

Re: Artificial Intelligence

Like I said, @teo123, I don't really see the point in arguing this since fear of AI is probably a good thing, even if irrational.
These just aren't the kinds of programs that malware is, there's no reason to believe its interface with its environment would be like that.

Re: Artificial Intelligence

Speculative? Yes. So, the AI does exactly the opposite of what it's intended for, and it also does things that we think are impossible for it to do . If it acts in ways we didn't know were possible, that's speculative. IOW NOT hard science. Hard science exists in the bounds of the known/testable de...

Re: Avoiding food obsession

probablybirdie I think you could use chronometer if you adjust the settings to hide things like calories. It's very customizable. Settings -> Display -> Turn off "Show Calories Summary in Diary" I would also say to only use it one day a week where you're mainly eating at home and have a very typica...

Re: Artificial Intelligence

An irrational fear of AI escaping could actually help prevent a high general intelligence SI from being developed and put into broad use Isn't that fear even more rational than the fear of global warming? I mean, it's based on an even harder science (computer science) than climate science is. No, b...

Re: Showering

I just wanted to know, is it healthier to take cool/cold showers? I'm gradually preferring them more the more I do them. Some people argue it is, and to take them less frequently, to preserve the oils on your skin. Hotter and more frequent showers may disrupt that. It seems like a pretty weak argum...

Hey do you guys think that the new HBO series is anti-nuclear propaganda?
Unintentionally. It's complete garbage science.

Thunderf00t did a video on it, though I have not watched yet I trust he knows his stuff here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsdLDFtbdrA
